Okay everyone. What should our President do in Iraq?

Jun 13, 2014, 3:02 PM

A mess to be sure. Some could reasonably say this is "all Bush's fault" for getting us into that country to begin with. Some could reasonably say this is "all Obama's fault" for removing all U.S. presence. And some could reasonably say this is "all Iraq's fault" for doing everything they can to make sure America isn't around anymore.

But whatever your position on whose fault it is...here we are.

What do you think America SHOULD do?

It seems to me personally like we should take some responsibility for the weak state Iraq is today. And if even if you don't feel that way, the national security considerations of having a country in the hands of radicals is obvious. A swift American response with air support would probably stem the tide and might give the Iraqi Security Forces some courage. But then what about "no boots on the ground"? Will the insurgents know that they just have to wait it out?

Jun 13, 2014, 3:40 PM

I can only imagine what could come of the Iranians stepping in to help the Iraqis when we wouldn't. That's not a regime that needs to have any more prestige in that part of the world.

Jun 13, 2014, 3:04 PM

There is no way we should send more ground troops in. I'm sure everyone agrees with this. Air strikes would seem like the next step, but do the Iraqis have the appetite for more unintended deaths from air strikes?

It's not "bait." It's a tough situation.

Jun 13, 2014, 3:09 PM

Are we SURE there's "no way we should send more ground troops in"? Was there value in even saying that at this stage? We could swiftly provide air support without making any comment on ground troops. There's no need to declare any option off the table, as unappealing as it is.

I'm pretty sure Americans wouldn't want to go into yet

Jun 13, 2014, 3:13 PM

another war in Iraq. I'd be pretty pissed if we sent more troops there.

And this war isn't really going to be against Iraq - it'll be against the insurgents and other people trying to take over Iraq.

No matter what the US decides to do - it won't be a good decision.

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpg2006_ncaa_champ.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

that's basically what the 2nd Iraq War was, right?

Jun 13, 2014, 3:20 PM

us fighting insurgents for control of the country? This would be a continuation of that and some might say an expected result. The depressing idea with all of this is that training the Iraq to protect themselves was the mission we've been on that now looks failed. I'm not sure I see a way this doesn't result in some sort of intervention by the United States. This group of radicals in Iraq now are said to be worse than Al Queda and the Taliban so we can't let them get control of Iraq for our own interests.

Iraq was a can of worms that never should have been opened, or if it was opened we should have just said screw it and just taken the country as our own. Playing the middle ground is going to cost us.

The phrase I heard this morning on "Morning Joe" was

Jun 13, 2014, 3:34 PM [ in reply to I just find when a sovereign state (the US) gets involved in ]

that when we occupied Japan, Germany, and Korea, they were all real nationalities with a national people, undivided by religion.

Basically the same thing you said, except the handy definition of how those countries are different from the Middle East.

The national borders of the countries there were drawn without respect to the historical tribal affiliations of the people living in the region. Even if the borders had been drawn to accurately reflect the individual tribes and sects, I still think we have the same amount of unrest. They don't seem to be able to help themselves.

We spent billions of dollars and years training the Iraq security forces and all that got us was them putting their weapons on the ground and running away. Iraq and Syria look to be an on-going problem for years and years...

Re: Okay everyone. What should our President do in Iraq?

Jun 13, 2014, 4:19 PM

The USA is a paper tiger. We have had our ### handed to us in every war we have been the aggressor in since WW2. We have a country full of puzzies who have a short attention span. If it's not a 3 month tv type series, we are not interested. The ### kissing Generals and self serving politicians have castrated the military. Our Military is now nothing more than a lab for social and PC correctness experimentation. Let's not get involved in any more wars until we have an army made up of transgender soldiers.

Starting a war the USA way means we invade a country with no intention of defeating the enemy and we have only a set amount of time to be engaged. When the set date for ending the "war" arrives, we declare the war is over and retreat. The enemy, especially the Jihadists, don't have any rules when it comes to killing the infidels. They will never quit the fight until they are completely wiped off the face of the earth. Something we are not willing to do.

Let's get back to the important chit. The Washington Redskins need to change their racist name to more accurately reflect the DC area they serve...the Washington Foreskins.
