Tanners big orange closing 12/23 after 80 years in business. Sad.
I shall be going there next week for a hot dog and an orange drank.

I learned because I made the mistake of ordering a chili dog, expecting a hot dog in it, and got what you described.

aversion to layers of flavor that all the other places around here, from Skins to Pete's, have. Still sad to see an old school place go down. I guess selling out to the next guy is too much trouble these days.

Legit Greek hot dog chili, by its nature

Is a little bland. That’s why you have to have mustard and onions.
With that said, I don’t recall the chili at the Eagle’s Nest having much more flavor than that either.

working on the construction of the Hyatt. Actually, two of the Daniel engineers motivated me to go to college.
That Big Orange had some strange characters come through it. Some were from business downtown, some construction workers and the really strange ones were the actors from some local venue which held theater productions. We had men in drag which got plenty of attention (negative) from the construction people.
I have not been in a Tanners in nearly 35 years.

Always a ghost town now. Not surprising it's closing. Seems to have really lost interest after the owner's comments on the "bulls" taking over the white wimmen.

He could have said "You know, no one ever talks about Hitler's great ideas" and I'd still be swinging by there next week for one last swig of the beverage I had multiple times a week as a middle schooler.

I have been frequenting the Frodos lunch buffet though, they're still going strong.
I remember getting picked up in the Tanners parking lot after middle school, that whole area has changed quite a bit from 20ish years ago. Noticeably less crackheads since Jessie Jackson townhomes were torn down.
