Has announced that they will not be re-opening. One of the old eateries of down town Charleston. It will be missed.

could you repeat that ?
Sersly tho , it's a shame to see established places like Old Town close but perhaps another entrepreneur gets a shot at that space and succeeds . A little capital and the opportunity in the wake of loss is a business model starter kit IMO

I didn't like the food there particularly, but I still think it's a bummer it is closing down. I liked the way it looked.

I don’t think the family was in it anymore the last decade; food quality went way down. A lot of businesses closing or selling here in Charleston before the pandemic because the latest generation of family is too stupid, too spoiled, or fighting over money to effectively run a business. Property values are so high that selling makes more sense.
My guess is they own that space at King/Market and it’s sale will make a very nice retirement.
At least I hopes it that instead of the family struggling.

It was time for new ownership or a major change of some kind. Used to love the Greek chicken there, but the last couple of times I ate there, the chicken was almost inedible. The dining area needed a thorough cleaning as well. It is a great location and I look forward to seeing what will replace it.

My wife's and my own favorite was Steve's Special. We used to go there when they closed a part of King Street For Christmas. Good Greek food is hard to find in the Charleston area.

It is among the places I recommend for people who have never been to Charleston and want to eat downtown at a "Charleston institution" without spending too much money.
Yelpers like it:

Hyman's is also more popular than:

No one has ever claimed that Hyman's is five star dining, or even close to being among the best restaurants in Charleston. But whether you like or not, it is a Charleston institution, and it is solid food for the price.
And it's also more highly rated on Yelp than many Clemson-area institutions often recommended on TigerNet forums.

PS: You brought Yelp into the conversation, it was your source. I don't care if you like Hyman's, lots of tourists do. I just wouldn't recommend a restaurant to someone visiting if I wouldn't visit it myself. That's all.

but I have lived in Summerville for 15 years (and in South Carolina for more years than this restaurant was open), and I had never heard of this restaurant until it announced it was closing this week.
Like Dug, I hope this loss will create an opportunity for someone else. I hope that there aren't many others that suffer the same fate. We have lost a few favorites in Charleston since the Great Recession.

One can find good to great seafood establishments from Beaufort to Little River but trying to find a really good Greek food place in the Charleston area is now very difficult. Do not know of one on the Grand Strand.
