On Sides Kick ?

Dec 1, 2014, 3:21 PM

Will someone please explain the on-sides kick that was ruled as no good. I thought it was perfectly executed...went more that 15 yards and was caught in mid-air. what was the reason it was dis-allowed ? other than they had to be SEC referees.

Ball never touched the ground and we didn't allow their guy

Dec 1, 2014, 3:24 PM

a chance to catch the ball.

looks like there are other responses, but yes, you are correct.

Any ball kicked off the tee, must hit the ground first before the KO team may recover it.
(with out the other team touching it)
If the ball goes straight into the air, the opposing team must be given the chance to
fair catch it.

Sucks I know.

The ball DID hit the ground.

Pinion kicked down on it, top of the football rolled over and hit the ground, thus popping up in that spin.

Only way the football could have a forward spin and the arc it did.

He got under it and popped it up

Dec 1, 2014, 3:25 PM

Here's where I get confused. We catch the on sides kick after it's gone 10 yards and you often see the punt team's player run under a punt and catch it BEFORE the receiver team has a chance to catch it, run with it. Seems like a rule change is needed.

Re: On Sides Kick ?

Dec 1, 2014, 3:29 PM

the coot player called for a fair catch by waving his arm, thus making him have to have the opportunity to make a catch just like a punt.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

false

Dec 1, 2014, 3:29 PM

no fair catch called and that wasn't evenly remotely part of the explanation

WOW...just make it up as you go along...not even

Dec 1, 2014, 3:36 PM [ in reply to Re: On Sides Kick ? ]

remotely what happened

Re: On Sides Kick ?

Dec 1, 2014, 3:28 PM

The kick must hit the ground, in addition to travel 10 yards to give the kicking team possession of the ball if they can recover the kick. That is why onside kicks are kicked straight into the ground.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

said it never hit the ground and Coots called fair catch

Dec 1, 2014, 3:29 PM

meaning you cant interfere with the catch. My one question is with it being a live ball, even with the fair catch, if we touch the ball first before making contact with the receiver should that not have negated the fair catch. For example, on passes if the ball is tipped or the defender deflects the ball first then you cant have pass interference for contact after the ball has been touched.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

i don't think there was a fair catch call

Dec 1, 2014, 3:30 PM

if he doesn't hit the ground, you have to give them a chance to catch it

even if no fair catch is it not a live ball

Dec 1, 2014, 3:34 PM

I can understand a penalty if you make contact with the receiver first and impede the catch, but it looked to me as if we caught the ball before contact.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

if the ball doesn't hit the ground, the receiving team gets

Dec 1, 2014, 3:40 PM

chance to catch it unimpeded...

that was the call... had it bounced high, no call...

I've seen that called once before on a high pooch that the kicking team ran under and caught with no kick returner nearby.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

unlike a punt, it is a live ball so no illegal touching

Dec 1, 2014, 3:32 PM [ in reply to said it never hit the ground and Coots called fair catch ]

penalty

Re: On Sides Kick ?

Dec 1, 2014, 3:30 PM

I was just really surprised that a coot player that doesn't return kicks had the presence of mind to call a fair catch in that situation. If he doesn't, its fair game.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

where are you guys seeing a fair catch was called?

Dec 1, 2014, 3:32 PM

that's not why there was a penalty

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

"I've been working since I was 15 continually until now. I worked 40 hours a week at 15, when it wasn't even legal for 15 year olds to work that many hours."

You're right, that's not what was called. However, when

Dec 1, 2014, 3:36 PM

I watched the replay, it does look like he called a fair catch...
