Part of the DJ deflection is rooted in the QB being

Nov 28, 2022, 6:30 PM

the most visible and prominent symbol of a team's offense. It's very easy for fans and even sportswriters to hone in on the person playing the position when an offense isn't delivering. An OL, RBs, and WRs act more in groups. We can get mad at an OL for whiffing on a block or an RB for a fumble or a WR for a drop, but those all fade quickly as a game and season progress, unlike the QB who is the sole, identifying figure in on every play and running the show.

Our coaches, football at least, have always gone to great lengths not to single out any player in public or let media folks get comfy calling kids out on a poor performance or play. We've seen them at their testiest when this happens, and over the past two seasons DJ has offered up a lot of opportunities for that. Following Saturday's dreadful, but almost there, performance, a loss to the worst possible team one can lose to, there was no way anything but outright support and appreciation for DJ was going to flow from a coach's or player's mouth. Not a chance. That's how this program rolls.

For those suffering through additional heartache beyond the actual loss Saturday because of what's being said and shared with the public around the QB position and other aspects of the team, give that a break. Take a load off. Just because it's not being said to a reporter and splattered all over Twitter doesn't mean that it's not being addressed in the locker room or offices or practice fields. Considering Dabo's track record, these past two disappointing 10-win seasons included, there is nothing to suggest ignorance on any of their parts when it comes to what is going on with each and every part of that team, staff included. We haven't achieved this kind of historic consistency to date just by happenstance, that's for sure.

Nov 28, 2022, 6:52 PM

Yeah, but that was after a win and on the jokey side with Myles. A little different.

I think it’s fair that QB is hardest and most visible position therefore more “protected”. That said, the play is awful right now. It’s not getting burned on 1 4th down or one fumble or 1 pass drop. This is consistent play WELL below average. I don’t think I’ve read a single post complaining about a performance at the Qb position that is mediocre. Mediocre play at QB and we are in the playoffs.

And enjoy the ride. Clemson is in much, much better shape football wise than you Knute Rocknes realize. Go Tigers Beat the Heels.
