Personally, I hope Big ove SEC when it does happen, if ever.

But one thing needs to be cleared up. The University of South Carolina would vote us into the SEC in a heartbeat. Why?

1. The state legislature will not let them do something so costly to a state institution, something that would cost the state tens of millions of dollars per year.

2. South Carolina and Florida have to play Clemson and FSU anyway as their rivals. So they have 8 conference games and then those very difficult rivalry games. They would love to have our game as one of their 8 conference games if they are going to have to play us anyway.

3. They think if we are not in the SEC, we are likely to make many more playoff appearances. They feel if we are in the SEC, we'd be like them and no more playoff appearances.

I still prefer the BigTen, but there is no way South Carolina will be the reason we don't get voted into the SEC, if that time ever comes.

There are reasons for and against both the BIG and the SEC.

In favor of the BIG, until the new schools join, it is much the easier of the two leagues on the gridiron. It is essentially the Big Two, with occasional flashes from Penn State or Wisconsin. Drawback is the travel that would be involved.

In favor of the SEC is the natural geographic rivalries that already exist to some extent. Life in the SEC would be tougher than life in the BIG on the gridiron, and EITHER would be tougher than the ACC up until this year in recent times. With Texas and Oklahoma joining the SEC, there would be some long travel times involved to those destinations as well, but not nearly overall what would be required year in and year out in the BIG.

If we join the SEC, our integrity would be immediately challenged.

I think the Big 10 is just more of the same things we don't like about the ACC. The two reasons Clemson voted no against Cal and Stanford were #1 decreasing TV money and #2 having to travel too far.
Remember that changing conferences is more than football. It's about student-athletes of all types.

The SEC answers one huge component for Clemson's college athletics concern with the ACC and that is travel. 10 of 14 teams currently in the SEC are within a 7-hour tour bus trip of Clemson with most being 4-6 hours. 3-4 of the schools are close enough for any competition to be a very easy same-day trip (1-3 hours). That alone makes the SEC a better conference for Clemson than any of the others including the ACC.

The money part is essentially the same with the SEC as the Big 10, but the Big 10 worsens the travel problem with every single week having significant travel.

How is going to the Big Ten decreasing TV money?

I did not say that money was a problem in the Big 10. I said going to the Big 10 or going to the SEC would be the same money-wise.
What I said about the Big 10 is that we have the save concerns about travel that we have in the ACC. It is actually worse travel as there are no Big 10 schools near us are there?

Maybe I misunderstood your point, but this sounds like #1 thing we don't like about the ACC is TV money and we would have the same problem with the Big Ten.

USuC will have no effect on our being admitted to the SEC. Do you think for a greasy minute that Sankey is going to let a bottom feeder keep Clemson out of the SEC if Sankey wants us in? No way.

Correct. Just like power brokers in VA legislature made sure VT got into ACC (when some in conference not for adding VT) same would happen with SC Legislature.

Harvey Peeler and Tom Alexander are leaders in the SC Senate and big Clemson supporters and would make in clear there would be a "penalty" if South Carolina tried to block a Clemson invite.

I was going to say the same thing. A&M fitched a pit when the SEC welcomed Texas with open arms because Aggieland deluded themselves into believing the SEC cared what they thought.

Sankey is not stupid. The SEC did not become the juggernaut it is by accident

Its 250 miles from Columbus to South Bend. Ohio State flew. They fly all the time. Its about an hour for every additional 600 miles they fly. So, 1 hr and 45 minutes or less to everywhere within an 850 mile radius. I dont think Travel is as big of a deal as people make it out to be. Flying to the west coast would suck. Thats a long flight. Now fan travel, thats another story.

I prefer the BiG, but the travel problem is for non-revenue

Sports not football. Women’s soccer flying to Los Angeles on a Wednesday to play Thursday and taking the red eye back for Friday classes (or not) to then play on Sunday is tough.
