Pig's Retirement Countdown... 10 Days Left

For my last 10 working days until retirement, I'll go through each of the jobs I've had since I was a kid.

Paper Boy for The State Newspaper, Cayce, SC, 1973-1980

When I was 11 years old my dad said it was time to get a job, and make some money. My sister (who was 3 years older than me) and I got a morning paper route where we delivered papers on our bikes, rain or shine (my dad would drive us in his car if it was raining hard). Every morning at 4:30 am we'd get up, roll the 100 or so newspapers, load up the bikes, and start delivering. After a year my sister got her drivers license, and we used my dad's VW to make the deliveries. We spent our Saturday afternoons going from house to house collecting money from our customers... payments weren't mailed in or paid on line like it is today. When my sister went to college, I bought my 1st car on my 15th birthday and picked up a 2nd route. I ran them both until I went to Clemson.
That 1st job set the stage for the rest of my working life. It took responsibility, drive, and dedication to deliver the papers, do the financials, and pick up new customers. I would not trade that 1st job for anything in the world.

Stay tuned tomorrow for job #2.

The Newspaper hasn’t been the same since you left, congratulations on retirement!

I’m sure you’ll find another hobby, job, bunny do list, professional traveler or skill set to sharpen during the after work life.

May you be blessed more and more everyday in every way!

Nice idea for the countdown.

But one important question. Was your Dad’s VW a beetle or a bus? My money is on beetle, but my mind went right to an old VW bus with peace signs in the back window.

Your right... it was a Super Beatle. My 1st car was also a Super Beatle which I paid for in cash on my 15th birthday. All the cops knew me from running the paper route for so long, so they didn't bust me for driving alone with only my permit.

I can appreciate the work effort. My first job was on the base at fort benning when I was 14 years old. I would bag up groceries and take them out for tips. Dad was a first sergeant so all 4 of his kids learned early what work was…

If I think about it, I can still smell the vinyl interior of.my dad's beetle from when I was a kid. Also remember holes in the rear floorboard I could watch the road as he drove.
