Maryland left the ACC. A precedent was set. Why can't others do the same??

I could be wrong, but I think they left before the GOR was put into place. It was MaryLand's leaving that prompted Swofford to panic and slap the sweetheart GOR in place. A knee-jerk reaction that screwed everyone in the conference, essentially.

that after 3 years to gather themselves, they panicked again in 2016 - signing one more time and extending the GOR another 10 years.

The ACC is the 4th conference to use GOR; exempli gratia the reason OU & Tejas waited to leave the Big12ish.

There was a simple, static exit fee of $50mil.

That was the only hurdle and it was negotiated down to $31.4, some of it paid by the ACC holding monies Maryland was due as their ACC share.

The exit fee is now ~$120mil and was reportedly based on a moving value involving time-value or $1 in 2013 is a $1.### today.

GOR was not around until 2013, Maryland left prior. GOR is a major deterrent.

Clemson and any other member can leave tomorrow, unfortunately any money their earn through media rights is the ACC's until 2036, but nothing is stopping any member from leaving. Well, other than money.

Perhaps the work around would be for the B10 to not payout to Clemson/FSU any media rights funding but instead provide a conference affiliation bonus to the schools at the end of the year at an amount similar to the typical media rights figure. Since Clemson would not be receiving any media rights funding there would be nothing owed to the ACC/ESPN. And yes I am spitballing...
