Possible "Scout Team" Misconceptions

The recent chatter making references to the "scout team", especially since the supposed Terry Kinard Facebook post, seems to indicate that some people assume that the "scout team" is a permanently identifiable subset of the team, that is "lesser than" the team. I don't know how the scout team is run today, but I bet it's similar to how it was run "back in the day": Everyone on the roster is the team. Everyone meets as a team. There are position group meetings. Everyone warms up as a team. Then there is a break out into position groups or other groups. 1s, 2s, 3s, 4s etc practice in their groups. The position coaches do the yelling. Occasionally, the OC or DC comes to a position group, observes, talks with the position coach, and moves on. Occasionally, the Head Coach comes to a position group, observes, talks with the position coach, and moves on. Occasionally, the Head Coach will address the position group. Very occasionally, the Head Coach will address an individual player in the position group. At some point, the 1s (and/or 1s and 2s) practice as a group. There are special situation practices. At some point in the week, a "scout team" will be formed to mimic the upcoming opponent. The scout team is comprised of specifically selected 3s and 4s etc (and sometimes 2s)(And this could conceivably include a DC who plays quarterback). If you think that the coaches and the 1s and 2s look down on the 3s, 4s, etc and the "scout team" then you got another think coming. About the only time the Head Coach yells at an individual player is when there is an incredible screwup (e.g., like a punter deciding he's going to run for a 1st down). Very occasionally the HC will yell at the offense, defense, special team, or the entire team. The OC, DC, or position group coach do the yelling when there's a screwup like blown coverage or misrun routes. If you think that the coaches and 1s and 2s look down on the scout team then you need to watch a scrimmage between the 1s2s and the scout team. The scout team plays like Venables coaches and the 1s2s have to up their intensity to match; otherwise, they will be embarrassed.

if a quote from a discredited story (Rudy) is true indication of the way a "real" coach (especially OUR coach) views the scout team players.
