I made numerous post about all the grief that UT caused Clemson in the early 80’s about recruiting violations. I think that many of today’s tnetters never fully learned of this probation and I expect many of you never learned of the total event.


You can google the football scandal of 1980s and read about all the nonsense that erupted from this report by UT and picked up by our friends in Chapel Hill. It turns my stomach to read some of these foolish claims by our fellow foes.

Several that I remember that really upset me was an assistant coach loaning his car to a young man he had recruited to visit his mother who became seriously ill. The coach said ... What was I supposed to do for this kid when I told his mom we would look after him and take care of him if she allowed him to become a Tiger? Say tough luck son,
It turns my stomach when I read this nonsense caused primarily by the a university of Tennessee. That alone should have been enough to ignite the Tigers in the OB. I seriously doubt if it was ever mentioned. There are many,many more and the really serious ones involved treating kids to a meal at Hardee’s,

One kid from Pennsylvania I believe lost a tooth during a sledding event one snowy evening. He went to a local dentist for repairs and dropped out of school at the end of the semester. The dentist looked to Clemson for payment and he got it. Clemson got two years probation and lost about 20;scholarships for these wicked deeds.

I could go on for hours about those days but the team needs to be reminded when they play UT or a similar foe.

Also the heinous offense of recruit eating a piece of fried chicken at his hosts families tail gate!

That one isn’t in my very large portfolio of those terrible times..... but I certainly don’t doubt it.

Another one that I thought hilarious but especially serious was a coach letting one of the host drive a young man to the Greenville airport because he had missed his flight. I expect it would have been a violation if he was forced to stay an extra day..

ABC and Jim Lampley were the real villains but little ole Clemson was in the news EVERY DAY and it all came about from a Clemson grad living in Knoxville trying to recruit a couple of one star players who never played a snap of college ball.

I think the one I mentioned was during Danny's years and the later probation.
We're Coffer and Minor during the earlier 80's probation?
