Question about Dabo being too insular in hirings/promotions

With all the hype around the Garrett Riley hire (and I couldn't be more happy with it myself) I'm left to wonder if the promotion at DC from within has (or will have) as much impact as we hope we'll get from the offensive hire.
Lots of pundit talk (mostly negative) about Dabo's hiring from within, and unless out defense shuts their mouths this will continue to be gnawed on throughout this year.
I think we're super talented on both sides of the ball and I expect a big uptick on both sides of the line of scrimmage.
This was more a statement than questions. Not changing the header though....I'm busy.

It has only one drawback: The Peter Principle where everyone is promoted one time too many. What that means to an employee is that he is going to end up fired if he takes that 'one time too many,' promotions. We've seen it. On the other hand, we saw Dabo promoted to head coach.
I think it's nearly impossible to select a man for promotion and know for sure if he's the right guy.
In my life I've only worked for two men who I believe were not promoted one time too many. I've also worked for a flock of buttsmoochers who had been promoted half a dozen time too many.

That's the most thoughtful and well explained response I've seen in some time. Nice job.
At the end of this season I suppose we'll have our answer. Goodwin has a ton of talent and experience to work with, so no excuses.

It doesn’t, but he probably shouldn’t.
And if we are being real honest, head coach of the football team is a more valued position than AD at Clemson, so I wouldn’t exactly call it a promotion. His passion and motivations would, I think, align well for the position. He truly appears to have the student athletes best interest in mind. But his singular focus and drive that makes him a championship caliber coach could be difficult to turn off when he has to remain for detached and take the upper atmosphere stance on decisions for Clemson athletics.

I dunno , but he went from Real Estate sales to WR coach to Head Coach ....all rather seamlessly.
Maybe AD after head coaching is over ??

Weslicheck's biggest problem he has to overcome is not X's & O's, although that was lacking at times last year. But he has to overcome the fact that he is not Brent Venables.

I have them in my industry as well , the guys that were promoted based on something other than actual qualification for the position.
I guess some said the same thing about Dabo in 2008. I know that I did.

As Dabo proved with Brandon Streeter, nobody on staff has a lifetime job. Anything sports talk people can say what they want to but Dabo is the boss.

Promoting a guy who had never been a position coach to DC was quite the high risk move by Dabo. We should have expected some growing pains, which proved to be the case. Not sure I would say Wes is on the hot seat but I do think we need to see improvement from last year.

I think Dabo believes in Wes but I don't think the timing for that move was Dabo's first choice. BV wanted Wes bad and he was set to leave and Dabo made the move, in large part, to keep him. I'm sure Dabo hopes Wes can grow into the role.
Maybe it was too soon for Wes and I guess we will find out how it plays out this year.

I would LOVE to understand why he is such a big deal and considered to be a genius or whatever. He was never even a position coach. Now he is the DC of a top 4, perennial, playoff and national championship contender. What?

If Streeter was fired after statistically improving the offense, why wouldn’t his seat be on fire? This defense on paper again has a lot of stars and talent. They looked uninterested last year and underachieved. You better believe he’s on the clock.

Certainly. SCar and Tennessee moved it on us quite a bit there at the end. I think we'll see significantly better play calling now that he's had his first season of settling into the position.

So the drop to 22 last year was due to the play calling? I am wondering how you came up with that conclusion? What I have seen and read is we had issues with all 11 players being on the same page. Still the responsibility of the DC but had nothing to do with the play call

nor is it always a good thing.
there should be a healthy mix of both inside and outside hires, especially in the major coaching positions at Clemson.
Dabo's "major" inside promotion/hires:
napier........didn't work
Scott/Elliott........worked, at least while Scott was here
Streeter...........didn't work
Goodwin...........TBD, not convinced just yet.
Dabo's major outside promotion/hires:
Chad morris.......worked
BV......worked
Riley.........TBD, I'm convinced he'll work, just needs a little talent upgrade at WR to be get us back to NC contention.

Elliot/Scott only worked with Watson and Lawrence surrounded by ridiculous talent at WR and later with ETN. Elliot was putrid with DJ. Streeter produced a better product than TE did with Stinko. I feel bad for UVA.

If the offense performs better the defense can play the same and should have better results.

I expect the defense to improve largely because I expect the offense to improve. I thought at times the defense had lapses in the past two seasons because the offense was so impotent. It has to be frustrating for a defense to make stand after stand and see the offense be unable to generate any momentum. When Klubnik came into the ACC championship game not only did the offense play much better but the defense played better, special teams played better, the cheerleaders cheered better, and the food and beer tasted better.
The jury is still out on Goodwin. I hope he is the man for the job and this season should tell the tale. If he’s not then Dabo has proven that he’ll find the man.

I believe that too , as far as the defense underperformed due to the offense's struggles to stay on the field.
We'll see about Wes Goodwin this year
We have the talent to be a Top 5 defense for certain.

This is a non-freaking issue, and generally, only people with little facility for Leadership themselves will bring it up.

I believe you can give an unproven guy a chance but doing that 3 or 4 times on the offensive side of the ball is ridiculous. We're getting wretched performance at WR. The online is nothing to write home about and although we're talented in the backfield I don't think Spiller is a football Coach and recruiting that position has been tough since he took over. The jury is still out on the supposed "mad scientist" on defense too.

It's hard to make successful coaches out of someone without the potential to be a successful coach. I sure hope Goodwin has that potential. If he fails this year he can always get work as Jonah Hill's body double.

Outstrips that of Dabo and Streeter...and even Elliot and Scott, when they took their roles at Clemson, in my view. Whether that translates in a leadership role, that's still under review.
The list of coaches Wes has worked with and for is pretty darn impressive. With respect to Streeter, given the timing of Tony's departure, it may well be Dabo's preferred target wasn't available but, no doubt, Dabo was watching. Dabo is thoughtful and purposeful and despite the angst of some on these s
boreds, isn't given to choices of 'popular T-Net opinion'.
Good leaders surround themselves with good people, thus we don't always see or know of all the key contributors to success. Those of you who have worked in industry, know that all too well.
