Question for IT wizards
Jun 14, 2022, 10:49 AM
|
|
I am using Splashtop business to get access to the office network from home, light work in the evenings, keeping the render servers up and running, etc..
I just got Tmobile's 5g Home service, bandwidth is exceptional( do recommend), 600-800 Mbps down, 80 up. For 50 a month, I am thrilled. Unfortunately, Splashtop is getting throttled, so I can not check into the office from the RV, and that is a kind of a deal-breaker for me.
Is there a way to set a direct connection in win 10/11 that is secure and does not require and 3rd party software package? T-Mobile is saying they are not limiting bandwidth, but there have been issues with some apps.
thanks

lol, the metal roof is getting me 60-80 Megbytes per second download speed, of 600-800 MBps, it comes close to rivaling fiber. It's literally faster than our network in the office.

why is that 5-6 times faster than their advertised speeds?
Jun 14, 2022, 11:07 AM

T-Mobile 5G Home Internet customers see typical download speeds between 33-182 Mbps, which is great speed for streaming video, surfing the web, working from home and most types of online gaming. Speeds can vary depending on location, signal strength and availability, time of day, and other factors. Our speed projections are based on our analysis of internal and third-party data. See T-Mobile.com/OpenInternet for more information.

and the camper is 5 miles from I95, hitting multiple towers intended to facilitate commuter traffic and emergency vehicles. I only get this after 8:00 PM, otherwise, speeds are as you noted.

Windows 10/11 have native VPN clients that can be

installed, but you'll have to have a receiving VPN concentrator (Could be a Windows server) that sits on both the dirty side of the internet and the clean side (your internal network)-a one server DMZ of sorts.
That said, I wouldn't recommend doing that. To do it securely, the receiving VPN concentrator needs to be sitting behind a firewall with non standard, dynamic ports punched out with AD based ACL's that allow access. Your best solution here is a MFA (multi factor authenticating) software that works on yet another server that your VPN will work with your firewall to allow access.

Maybe give Chrome Remote Desktop a try??

I've used it while on vacation to access my home computer and it works pretty good with my limited needs. Google claims it has good security but who really knows with Google...

that is essentially what splash top does, very clunky. But all I am doing is monitoring the render servers, resetting machines when necessary, and light project management.

To do a VPN into your network "right" (secure), its not

as easy/cheap.
Really, what you are currently doing is probably not that secure, but every CIO (or the guy who "does the computers" at your office) has their own acceptable level of risk.

that is me. Splashtop requires dual authentication, I accept their request, then send them a code that is sent to me.. and it keeps a log of who is logging in from where and when, IDK as much about this stuff as yourself, but it seems secure enough for us. I just wish it would work with the 5g, there are definitely some issues, need to try another method, and their tech support is no help.

Seems like you just picked the wrong software.

Teamviewer is around the same price point and works better in my experience for managing multiple connections. Some IT depts don't like it, but keep up best practices elsewhere and you should be fine.
If it's just one machine you're logging into, I use Anydesk. I can remote into my work PC from the car line and send attachment emails, etc. I use a dock which renders the wake on LAN functionality useless, but that's a neat feature.
https://anydesk.com/enDiscover AnyDesk, the secure & intuitive remote desktop software, and take advantage of the application's innovative features!
