Questions for anyone whose cut the cord

6

May 10, 2023, 12:12 PM

Really getting tired of the exorbitant Spectrum bill each month given the quality of programming. Really only watch a lot of TV during college football season. Currently, I have the sports extra package so I get all the different league networks including ACC. Questions:

1. Is buffering an issue? My brother-in-law went streaming a few years ago and when I was at his house watching a game, it buffered for a few seconds over a couple of hours. Hated that...

2. Can you still get all the sports packages including ACC network?

3. Is there a way to "DVR" or record programming?

4. What's the best streaming device or program?

5. What are some of the drawbacks?

Yup. Coupled with our Disney+ / ESPN+ streaming the only games I don't get are those few on the regional Bally sports channels, mostly basketball, and that's what friends are for.

The ONLY downside I’ve had with YouTubeTV is

2

That it started at $45 a few years back, keeps adding channel packages I don’t care about, but they make my bill go up to current $80

Sound like a familiar pattern?

3. You have unlimited "DVR"

Have had issues with buffering, seems to have delay. As others have said depends on your internet service.

Yes, you may have to choose your service by which one provides access though and may have to pay for it extra.

Yes but depends on service and may cost extra

I encourage you to do the free trials. There are some that are clearly #### poor but it often depends more on the channel lineup you want. In other words one may have acc network one may not. When I was looking I liked the YouTube and PlayStation. Also used at and t at one point which wasn’t bad. Then I had no issues with sling.

But they are no dummies they keep jacking their prices up too. That’s one of the biggest drawbacks

YouTubeTV does increase their price by about $5 per year, but

May 12, 2023, 7:37 PM [ in reply to Re: Questions for anyone whose cut the cord ]

there is a huge difference in their business model, and that of Dish or DirectTV. YTTV, and most steaming services I think, have no contracts! Dish & Direct will try to double their price over the term of the contract, and you have to keep calling them and threaten to leave, to get the price back down! This strategy gets old after a while!

With YTTV, you know what their price is...if it increases, it increases the same for everyone! AND, you can drop it at any time. I know folks who are interested only in college football, so they only subscribe September through January!

I had DirectTV for years, until I got Carolina Connect Fiber four years ago. I am much happier with YTTY than I ever was with DirecTV!

1. No; I maintained my Spectrum internet service. Spectrum internet is the best in my area. $80/month.

2. Hulu+LiveTV is owned by Disney which owns E$PN. I get ACC Network and all the others including the '+' channels - ACCN, ESPN+, Disney+, etc. Last bill was $80/month.

3. Hulu+LiveTV has DVR capability and saves recordings for 9 months.

4. I have two (2) RokuTVs. Use to use Google Chromecast and Roku Stick. No longer need those.

5. Switching between channels has a slight delay. And, the live feed is about 30 seconds behind radio if you prefer the radio broadcasts of the games. Live TV Guide is alphabetical by network. No BallySports, so no live Braves games. BUT, I have not regretted leaving Spectrum TV

Spectrum is far more interested in trying to attract new business with discounted pricing rather than taking care of its existing long standing/loyal customers.

Hulu live works well for me. If you have an amex, they offer $20 off a month any disney streaming service which includes hulu or the disney bundle. Hulu also has DVR service. Youtube TV's interface is better than Hulu's if ease of use is super important to you.
Also you need quality internet to stream but you certainly don't need gigabit or the top of the line plan.

We dumped Spectrum for TV a couple years ago and it has been WONDERFUL. We switched to Youtube TV for half the cost and twice the programming and we can use at wherever we go because it is streaming so we just sign in. Also, we get all the ACCN and ACCN+ as part of the Youtube package which I use a lot for Clemson Baseball, Basketball and Softball. My wife loves it as she has more movies available than she can ever watch.

Not really if you have high speed internet. I was with Spectrum, I cut them loose of everything but the high speed internet that they will over charge you for, but it's still a lot cheaper to stream. After I've gotten use to streaming, there is no way I could ever go back to a cable based company just for watching TV. Streaming with high speed internet is the way to go, I will never go back to cable or dish!!!!

Good stuff guys. Thanks! My Spectrum Bundle bill is right at $350 per month. Really ticks me off when I see that each month.

Sounds like football will not be an issue but I will have to give up Braves. Honestly, I don't watch them like I did back in the 90's anyway so it wouldn't be a big deal.

You must have every movie package known to man, and about 10 tv's! My internet is $70 per month for 750 Mb.Would only be $50 for 350 Mb. Then my YouTubeTV is $74 per month, for up to five devices! The devices can even be at different locations!

Call spectrum and tell them you are about to switch and they will cut you a deal. Tell them which channels you really want and the ones you don't need. The streaming thing didn't work for me. The spinning wheel and the whole process wasn't worth it.
I pay $50.00 more per month but its worth it. Now if they want come down then you just have to decide how much you are willing to pay. Good luck.

When I told them I was leaving, they told me to call back in a couple of weeks to get the reduced rate. I asked, "Why can't you do it now?"

The response was, "I can't authorize that."

"OK, can you transfer me to someone who can?"

"Yes, hold please"

Authorized one, "How can I help you?"

I asked for the reduced rate for a longstanding customer and was planning to drop Spectrum TV.

"OK. Let's cancel today and then you call back in a couple of weeks to re-establish service."

"Why can't you do it now?"

"Policy"

"Cancel my account. And, good-bye"

Got rid of Spectrum several years ago. Streaming issues depend on your internet provider. We had Spectrum for that as well and had continuous issue. Had a fiber optic provider move in to compete, we switched. Not ONE ISSUE since the switch.

As for the service, Hulu+, Fubo, and YouTube TV are all valid options. I have used Hulu, it’s fine but the cost started approaching Spectrum so ‘I switched to Fubo. Less costly. About to switch again to YouTube TV for the NFL Package.

YoutubeTv. Cut the cord a few years ago and no regrets. Most of my TV viewing is college football. Being here in the south, rarely is there a game I want to watch but isn't televised. We kept Spectrum internet and I can plug in a TV anywhere in the house, garage, or outside at the fire pit and get streaming (with no buffering). Only downside - can't watch the Braves nightly.

Youtubetv - I really like it. In regards to buffering, I believe I have AT&T 350 MBPS at home and have no problems at all. We have Xfinity 50 MBPS at our store and if I try to watch live sports while hiding in the back room on weekends it will buffer on occasion. Most home services are 300+ these days though.

2

May 10, 2023, 1:44 PM

i assume you have charter internet and charter TV and want to get rid of charter TV.

the quality of your streaming will be based off the CHORD you have for internet. I have Charter, Att Fiber, and now WOW fiber in my neighborhood.

I still use charter. ATT and wow offer much higher speeds but they both come at a much higher cost as well and data limits.

IF you ONLY stream TV and don't have 45 kids playing mega blow heads off people video games the 200-400 MG service charter offers will be fine. YOU will lag every one and while but not too bad.

Sling Orange is the cheapest service to offer the ESPN channels, might have to stream from ESPN app to get the ESPN Extra channels but it's for 1 device. To get up to 3 devices connected you have to buy the Sling Blue & Orange combo for like $55-60/mo. Still requires internet service obviously.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I have YouTubeTV, and have had it for a few years.

2

May 10, 2023, 2:22 PM

I haven't had any issues whatsoever with buffering. The connection is rock solid, and certainly better than it was when I had satellite or cable. I have fiber internet, but even when I had cable internet the connection was great with no issues.

ACC Network is an option, although I don't recall if it's part of their base plan or the sports package. I have both.

YouTube TV has unlimited DVR space. You can set it to record an episode or a series. For example, you can set it to record Clemson football anytime it's on, and it automatically records it. Same for TV shows you like.

I've tried Fubu TV, Sling TV, and YouTube TV, and YouTube TV is my favorite. They are all about the same price with similar channels, but YouTube TV is nice because it has plenty of sports but also has Hallmark Channel which my wife likes during the holidays.

Another advantage is that you can watch it on multiple devices, including computer, phone, and tablet. That's great if someone in your house is watching TV and you want to watch something different (including another TV in the house). It's also nice when traveling.

The only drawback is that the streaming services have been gradually going up on prices. Plus, you have to also consider the cost of any other streaming services you watch, such as Netflix, Paramount, Apple TV+, Disney+, etc. However, your cost will still be far below what you are probably paying for cable, and you probably have some of these streaming apps anyway.

I’d go with YouTube TV if you don’t know how to get an IPTV service on a firestick ( I get every channel in the world for $25 a month) and get you a mesh network for your wifi. Speed isn’t as important as people make it out to be you need a consistent connection. In 13 years in the business the best ones I’ve seen are EEROS, Orbis, or Netgear nighthawk Wifi6 mesh.

Assuming the interweb is hardwired to your home, it has enough bandwidth to stream without buffering. When I cut the cord I had to replace an old modem (replacement provided free by provider) and a new wireless router ($120 from Amazon). I use a firestick and can stream on two TVs plus aggravate the shirt-trucking crowd on t-new simultaneously with no buffering

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The buffering is going to depend on your internet speed. I

1

May 10, 2023, 8:25 PM

have internet from a cable company and it's 940 to the modem. You don't need near that speed. Your router is also going to impact speed. I need a new modem for sure, but don't have any buffering issues even with 2 tvs and 2 laptops going at the same time. I'm using Rokus to get internet to the tvs. Like the simplicity of the remote. Probably same for others. Currently using youtubetv (had ACC network) for television, and also have amazon prime. You can get a free week on every one of them so give them a try. The interfaces are very different on each of them. There are channels you don't get with all of them, and they are very different. Tried them all and settled on playstation the first time, but then they did away with it. Youtube added some of the channels we wanted, so went with them after playstation. Happy with it. Cloud DVR is awesome.

I've had YouTube TV for years that I use at home and at my Lake Oconee vacation house. Something interesting is I recently went to TMobile at the lake for internet service and it works just as well as my high speed internet at home. It was new to me too and I had my doubts, but it works perfectly. I do not have their phone service. They are expanding nationwide and you have to check if there is an antenna in your area. My place is on Lake Oconee it works perfectly. Plus they guaranteed me $50 forever. Now I'm seeing it is $30 forever. Ha. YouTube TV basically answers all of your questions in a positive way, if your internet package has enough bandwidth. I think that I'm spending $70+/month. Do it.

Some Questions answered for anyone who wants to cut the cord

May 14, 2023, 10:41 AM

I switched from DirecTV to YouTube TV last fall.

I get all the sports channels I need for football, and YouTube will have the NFL package starting this year (If you watch NFL) I added ESPN Plus for $10/mth to get NHL & extras

YouTube TV has unlimited DVR, and you can set up by individual user, to easily locate your favorite shows, etc.

Warning! How smart is your smart TV? TV apps are constantly updated, and not all smart TV's can be upgraded to match. I use Amazon Firesticks to stream all apps (on the TV's that are too old to keep up)

The only drawback to Firestick (Not sure about Roku), is the sound doesn't always match the video. Not sure how to fix that.

I purchased a mesh network to get better WiFi through my house, and have no issues with buffering

Oh, and I'm saving $100/mth by making the switch.

A year ago I cut the cord and bought a Roku device. Yet spectrum is still an issue and I'm soon changing my deal with them. You can get 15 your choice channels, plus local. I still stream with spec. And that really isn't saving money with THEM. SOON I'm dropping them or redoing my agreement to get 15 channel package.

Roku works good.

Personally have liked YouTube. Do not get near the channels as our local provider but get what I need. Also have a couple of apps on my Apple TV to catch a few things as well.

The cable companies buy some channels in bulk to get a competitive rate. So you may get 5 channels you do not care about to get the one that you do want to watch. The tv business is expensive when negotiating with all these networks. ESPN is your biggest cost but who is going to go without that channel. They give us a price and base it on our total subscriber count no matter if you watch it or not. Channel cost plus maintaining the infrastructure is very expensive. Our company is slowly migrating to a broadband only company.

I'll try to list concerns in order and briefly.

1) Buffering- This depends on your connection and the connection from the server. Most streaming services use SW platforms called DASH or HLS that will adjust to network speed. You can google ookla speedtest to determine your network speed. Anything greater than 30Mbps downstream should be able to handle video streaming provided you aren't streaming on multiple devices.
2) Which service to go with? I recommend researching YoutubeTV and Fubo TV. YoutubeTV offers more channels including ESPN and the conference networks. Fubo offers ESPN, the conference networks and Bally (if you're a Braves fan). Fubo doesn't offer as many channels and the application isn't as robust as YoutubeTV. Fubo does offer a free trial so you can see if it works in your area. The best part is they are monthly so after the Braves season you can switch to YoutubeTV and get the better experience. Both offer Network DVR for recording etc.
3) Spectrum Data limits. Make sure you don't have a data limit on your Spectrum internet account that is attached to their programming i.e. If I cancel cable TV do I lose my unlimited data over internet. I think most companies have gone away from this but ATT was notorious for this if you cancelled their TV service and still had their internet.

I'm on fiber optic but had trouble with Hulu buffering.

Don't seem to have any issues with youtubeTV or NetFlix/Amazon Prime.

We switched from ATT and 16 Mbps (paying for 40) to UpCountry Fiber and now get 250 Mbps for roughly the same price. Then we sent DirecTV packing.

Switching Myself. Question.

If I am reading everything correctly, it sounds like people have not had an issue getting Clemson football or Clemson sports on Youtube TV, yes?

Do you have to get an additional package to make that happen?

I am in Rock Hill, SC. I know you have to insert your area; so it can provide local channels.

about $10/mo more for the Choice package(req for ACCN/Bally) vs YoutubeTV but if you are a big Braves fan that will get you Bally Sports

I am certain I saw a youtube tv package with Bally sports South!

If I can just get the CU games; I'm good. I would give up some Braves games "live" to be able to save over $120 a month from what I currently pay.
