2nd/ 3rd year head coaches winning NC's

Meyer won a NC in his 2nd year at UF, 3rd @ OSU; Saban did in 2 @ LSU, and 3 @ Alabama Cooker did it in his 2nd year at Miami Tressel was in his 2nd at OSU Stoops was in his 3rd year @ OU Chizik was in his 2nd at AU Miles was in year 3 at LSU Pete Carol hadn't been at USC long, maybe 3-4 years Danny Ford- 3rd year Fulmer was in year 2 or 3 Loyd Carr was in year 3 @ Michigan Helfrich got to the game in year 3 @ Oregon Jimbo was in year 4
These are just a few I can think of. Seems like the longer your there, the les likely you are to win one. Beemer got to a NC game in his 14th year, and Spurrier was in his I think 7th at UF. But for the most part, it seems like if you don't get it in your first 3 it doesn't happen.
What are your thoughts on this? It is a fluke, or does it symbolize the drive and fire that comes from starting a career as a new head coach or as head coach at a new school.

Without copying the list I think we could look over it, ask ourselves about the status of the programs those guys inherited and come to this conclusion.
Most folks do not like starting a business from scratch but prefer a going concern. Dabo appears to have caught us sort of in the middle and is heading towards a NC (whether he gets there or not). Few are those who start from nothing and build to unqualified greatness. Those who do usually spend a great deal of time doing it, think Bowden Paterno Bryant ....

According to your post there has only been 15 NC games played? I think if you went back and looked at all of them there would be a lot more coaches win one that has been there multiple years.

Tom Osbourne, Vince Dooley, and Joe Pa all won after years and years of coaching. But the trend is starting to go towards the the newer guys. Like the title said, here are a few I can think of. It is strange that I went back to the games I can remember watching ( I'm 32 ) and could think of so many that were in their first 3 years. Obviously I wasn't born in time for Clemson's NC, but I knew who won it ( 57 days shy ), but you get what I'm saying.

Saban and Meyer aren't done. They got there early and stay close. Their programs are monsters with or without them. Recruits flock to them.
Otherwise, maybe it's that when programs recruit well and don't win big, alums see coaches fired. Probably, these days, two years too early.

I could've "coached" 2001 Miami to a national championship. They only had like 20 1st round draft picks and 40 NFL players on the roster or something like that.

Also, that was Coker's 1st season. Butch Davis built the

program and took the Canes to a 10-1 regular season in 2000, but they got left out of the title game in favor of FSU whom they had beaten. At the end of the season Davis left to coach in the NFL (Browns i think) and Coker was promoted to HC. He inherited the most talented CFB team ever assembled in the games 100+ year history and went 13-0 with it beating Nebraska in the title game. The following year they went unbeaten again but lost to Ohio State in the title game. And then the slide began as Davis' talent left for the NFL and Coker struggled to recruit.

I think the biggest thing that stands out about that list is you are talking about the major powers in college football. Outside of 1 or 2 teams listed all of those programs had loads of talent because of the names on the jerseys. Yes most of those are good coaches but things were in place before they arrived they just needed to manage them correctly which in many cases the predecessor could not do. Those programs are similar to Texas and Michigan now. With the right coach the talent is available. They key is to continue growing or maintaining your programs current stature. Once you lose grip it can slide quickly. Good news is Dabo just keeps climbing.

You mention schools like Florida, the REAL USC, Michigan, Auburn, Oregon, LSU, Miami, Alabama, Oklahoma and FSU, and the one thing you overlook is these are teams that have historically been powerhouse programs, funneling in lots of $ and high profile recruits. All it takes is a respected new face to energize the players and fan base and everyone rallies around that. Look at the names there...most were well-respected coaches before ever taking the job. Take Clemson for instance, unfortunately, our fan base has only recently, wholeheartedly rallied around Dabo and the improvements he's made within our program. Many didn't trust this unproven guy, but as the chips start to fall, we begin competing with the best of them for top recruits. It's just been unfortunate that we haven't been able to put it all together with issues like Kevin Steele and his horrid defense, plus the likes of SCU and FSU having a few of the best years in their programs history. Couple the 2011 offense with the 2014 defense and we are NC bound IMO. We are trending upward though...the best is yet to come, and I don't see us going anywhere for a while.! Go Tigers!
