Yes - 86 and part of 87 - the fire story

Fall of 86 was great. Spring of 87, not so much.
We lived in the building closest to the laundry room. Very early on a Friday morning (around 1:30 am), my roommate and I were still up studying for big tests that day. The alarm in the laundry room went off, then "died". As we went to see what was happening, we saw flames coming from the entrance door.
We woke up our two other roommates, called the fire department and started banging on neighbor doors to wake them up. As you can imagine, lots of people were upset but understood when they saw the flames. Our two nextdoor neighbors had just come in, but we couldn't get them to the door. We kicked in their door and they were passed out in their living room.
The fire department arrived, but couldn't get to our building. Crazy Zacks was adjacent to Village Green, and the overflow parking was along the curbs in our complex. Basically, the fire trucks couldn't get close enough to put out the fire.
Spring forward an hour, the fire department drove around the back side of our apartments and was attempting to shoot water over the trees to fight the fire. Not a lot of success with that, and by this time the fire jumped from the laundry room to our building. From there, it spread very quickly.
Glass half full, we were able to get everyone out safely, including our drunk and passed out neighbors. Glass half empty, we lost everything we own including some irreplaceable things such as high school annuals, photos from vacations, etc. The Red Cross was awesome and our landlord helped us find a place to live for the rest of the semester.
Obviously, my roommate and I (having lost everything we own) were unable to make it to our exams that day. My professor (I won't share his name) gave me a "make up" exam that was absolutely horrible. He literally said to me "what do you want from me, I didn't start the fire." I failed that class. I survived my other courses, but remember all my notes from those classes (and books) were lost in the fire.
Sorry this is a long story, but an interesting one for TigerNet. We later learned someone attempted to steal coins from the washers and dryers that night. When that was unsuccessful, they poured gasoline in a trash can and set it on fire.

The spring of 87 was my last semester at Clemson. I had a friend that lived there through the spring of 86. When village green was mentioned I knew I had heard of it but didn’t realize immediately and then I recalled it was down in a hole beside Crazy Zack’s which was also in a hole. I went to Zack’s a lot. Loved the music and dancing there. I don’t remember the fire though. I lived at Riverbank Commons my last 3 years.

dorm rooms. The back of my apartment was literally 10 feet away from what was then a night club/dance club called Area 51. Hardly got any sleep that summer.
