Eight seems right to me as well, but drop the conference championship games altogether and shrink the lay-off between season's end and the play-offs. My two cents...adjusted for inflation...

Interesting. Haven't thought ab dropping conference champ games. I was thinking make every conference have them so that way each champ game is almost like a play in game for the playoff. More drama? The. 3 at large with one being highest rated mom aq. Think it shows though how important the playoff is. Ohio state wouldn't have gotten a chance in previous years. It they obviously showed they were the nest team.

Dropping the league championship games and going to

8 teams would be the best case scenario after seeing how this first series has played out. Use that 1st December weekend instead as a first round game, utilizing the current league championship host venues, with an extra one thrown in and rotated to accommodate the Big 12. This would allow the leagues to do away with football divisions altogether and allow for more frequent play among all members. It would also take some pressure off of the push toward 9 conference games per league and open up for more intriguing OOC games throughout the season - a little extra diversity. The losing teams from that first round could then be re-cast into the bowl pool so they wouldn't miss out on the extra practice time.
Considering the ratings from this year, I would think the conferences would ultimately benefit more by converting those games into a true playoff round. Much of their current revenue is off the TV rights anyway. And think of what doing away with divisions altogether would mean. The ACC could get away with giving every team three permanent rivals (ours could be FSU, Ga. Tech & NC State), then rotate through every other team in the league every two years. The regular season champion takes the host spot and auto-entry, and the runner-up better be good enough to beat out other at-large candidates.

I would be on-board with 8 teams, but I think a couple condtions would need to be added.
One being that the 5 conference winners would have to be ranked in the top 10 of the final regular season poll to qualify. That way you avoid a circumstance where a lowly ranked team sneaks into the playoff simply by winning their conference championship game....For example, back in 2012 had that 6-6 GT team beat 10-2 FSU in the ACCCG they would have been the ACC Champion that year, but would not have been selected to the playoff because they weren't ranked in the top 10 afterwards.
Another conditon would be that no conference could have more than two teams in the playoff....Same as the old BCS system.
I would also like to see the first playoff round played the week after the conference championship games on the home fields of the higher seeded teams...That would provide a huge incentive to teams to finish high in the polls and keep the relevancy of the regular season intanct.

I like the fact you don't have to be ranked in the top 10 to get in. Play your way in that's what the playoffs are supposed to be about. If you win your conference your in period.

So, you would be fine with an unranked 7-6 conference champion getting in the playoff over an 11-1 or 10-2 team ranked in the top-10 that didn’t win their conference?

5 Champions 2 at large and 1 spot for the highest ranked G5 team. (There would be some stipulations for the G5 slot.) Couldn't have more than 1 loss or something like that.

This is the best format. Gives teams incentives to play big OOC games and everyone gets a chance. We already have 6 bowls ready to host the playoff games and continue to let the championship bid on hosting. Bye week after championship weekend and then the 1st round the Saturday before Christmas. Bowl games spread in between but none on days of playoff match-ups.

ESPN made killing off of the playoff this year.
They're already calculating how much they'll make off of an 8 team playoff and thinking about a 16 team playoff.

I agree 16 makes bowls worthless, and to many teams for just 16 spots.

how many teams are in "D1" (120+)? Top 16 teams is close to the top 10%....D1 has to downsize. Which would be good for schools in conferences with no chance of ever playing for a D1 championship. They need a lower "division".
