SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, I'm guessing the coaching staff that took a 3 star TE and made him the best DE ever to attend college in SC just might have these guys ready.

their recruiting ranking. With their staff, you have what you have when they step on campus, never improving, sometimes(M Davis.Jeffries) they get fat and regress.
Seeing a staff that can recruit/coach/develop/teach is new to them .

Lawson is a star . I also feel that Dodd will come up and be a solid player . Our two redshirt freshman are also very intriguing prospects at the DE position , speaking of Yeargin and Register. I don't see us getting the same production at the position as last season , but we will still be pretty good because our back 7 is going to be VERY good.

charge. Anthony sucked! Lost his job 6 games into the season under Venables. We also had another linebacker that was a 2/3 year stater, who was 3rd team about 3 weeks into Venables tenure. But, don't worry.....Dawn has got you covered.

Coaching up players, something lost upon the inept coaching staff in the cesspool in Columbia.

don't expect this to happen overnight.
I think there's a good chance we find a reliable DE to compliment Lawson somewhere on the roster, but it's far from guaranteed.

Try to use capitalization next time, dumb Coot. Honestly, reading your posts is like reading that of a second grader. Did they learnt you that down in Cootlumbia? If you check your grammar and make your thoughts flow a little better, maybe you might be taken a little more seriously. Oh wait, no you won't because you're a Coot and you're trying to argue with real Clemson fans here. Please leave and take your ignorance with you. The tribe has spoken.

It's 9 BUT only 3 are upperclassmen. 98 Kevin Dodd DE 16* 6-5 275 Greer SC Riverside HS Jeff Scott 53 Martin Aiken DE 16* 6-2 250 Bamberg SC Bamberg-Ehrhardt HS Marion Hobby 90 Shaq Lawson DE 16 6-3 275 Central SC Daniel HS Morris/Brooks/Hobby
Martin Aiken is a "tweener" so will still probably be just ST. Kevin Dodd is still an unknown. Looks thin to me.

Austin Bryant looks to be physically ready in the pictures

without pads and then, when you see him in action on the football field, he looks long, fast and athletic. He looks faster and more athletic than you would expect from his strong build. I think he has a good shot to play early too.
I saw where Ferrell has gotten up to around 250. Bryant is at least that and possibly more by now. One or both of those two could be in the two deep.
Register may surprise after a summer to get acclimated. His high school film reminds me of Andy Headon.

We are thin...right now. Some guys are going to have to develop quickly.
Besides Lawson and Dodd, I'm not super-high on the vets. I haven't seen much out of Dane Rodgers or Martin Aiken. Not calling them "goats" or "misses" or "Just Some Guys", but they also haven't shown they can contribute yet, either. It would help more than a bit if one or both were able to contribute...not sure that will happen.
I have heard Ferrell is a big-time stud...but he's coming back from ACL injury, too. Ferrell could play strongside or weakside. Will he be healthy enough to make in impact?
Coaches are high on Yeargin III, but he did not look ready to make an impact to me. He's of that breed of pure weakside ends the coaches like to bring in - like Beasley - who are maybe 6'4", long, 220'ish, and have that first-step quicks that allows them to get the edge...usually it takes a couple years in the weightroom to get them physically strong enough to get them to be able to hold up. Yeargin looked like he's still a year away, to me. LaSamuel Davis is another of those and he's a true frosh...two years away, IMHO. Expect to hear from him again his redshirt sophomore year.
Register might have the size and strength to make an impact now. The door's wide open for him because there's no obvious claimant to the #2 weakside end slot behind Lawson. And of course, there's Albert Huggins - who could (and wants to) play strongside end, but might be better-suited, long-term, for tackle. Huggins is a stud wherever he lands. Austin Bryant is another guy who could factor as a true frosh; he had offers from every school in the Southeast and certainly looked like one of the top five guys even in this past, very loaded, recruiting class.
I liked what I saw of Dodd at the strongside end spot this Spring. He looked ready to start, and with Ebo emerging behind him we looked very set at the strong side. Well, stuff happens.
So what we're looking for are backups at weakside and strongside end...and we have five guys, IMHO, who could factor there - Register and Yeargin III, both redshirt freshman, and Huggins, Ferrell, and Bryant, all true freshmen.
Best case is either Huggins or Bryant grabs the now-vacant #2 strongside end spot quickly - I find this likely, these guys were uber-blue-chip prospects who could have written their ticket to any school in the Southeast, ACC or SEC - and one of Register, Yeargin III, or Ferrell grabs hold of the #2 weakside spot. I'm sure the coaches would prefer it be Register or Yeargin III, which would allow Ferrell to redshirt. Hope it happens that way. But one of those three guys needs to show they can get the edge and get to the QB.
Still, it is kinda...nice, to be sitting here fretting over who our backups are, and whether this newb or that newb is going to be ready to contribute...and these are pretty much all 4-star guys we're talking about. I guess that's what they call Uptown Problems.

Question....
May 21, 2015, 1:14 PM

I know he is a DT, but he is crazy athletic. I wonder if we would ever play Christian Wilkins at DE for a season? I realize that he will be an all world DT in a year or so, but we are so deep at DT. What do you think?

he's probably penciled in to the 2-deep at DT right now. I could see Huggins staying at SDE instead of moving to DT which was where he had been practicing most.

I'm not so sure we're thin there. I'm not even sure if we're that inexperienced. No, there's no Vic, and no, we're not going to AS good as 2014 on the line, but we're pretty much reloading, not rebuilding. Opponent's fans might sleep easier thinking otherwise, but their coaches won't, so it's not going to be cakewalk for us, but not a huge worry.

I know we are inexperienced, but I think we have 5 solid DE's who will be ready to play this season. Lawson and Dodd should be solid starters, and I think Huggins can be a really good #2 guy at SDE once he gets a little experience. Yeargin should be a solid pass rush specialist with Register backing up Lawson except in pass rushing downs.

Is Yeargin ready to make a splash, though? Didn't see it - at all - in the Spring Game. Was looking for somebody, anybody besides Lawson to show they could get to the passer...didn't see anybody. Actually, not true - one guy really stood out, and it was Ebo. Yeargin got handled, was VERY quiet, in the Spring Game. Also didn't set the edge very well.
