A DATE THAT WILL LIVE IN INFAMY GAVE BIRTH TO THE GREATEST GENERATION

"Mr. Vice President, Mr. Speaker, Members of the Senate, and of the House of Representatives:
Yesterday, December 7th, 1941—a date which will live in infamy—the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan.
The United States was at peace with that nation and, at the solicitation of Japan, was still in conversation with its government and its emperor looking toward the maintenance of peace in the Pacific.
Indeed, one hour after Japanese air squadrons had commenced bombing in the American island of Oahu, the Japanese ambassador to the United States and his colleague delivered to our Secretary of State a formal reply to a recent American message. And while this reply stated that it seemed useless to continue the existing diplomatic negotiations, it contained no threat or hint of war or of armed attack.
It will be recorded that the distance of Hawaii from Japan makes it obvious that the attack was deliberately planned many days or even weeks ago. During the intervening time, the Japanese government has deliberately sought to deceive the United States by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.
The attack yesterday on the Hawaiian Islands has caused severe damage to American naval and military forces. I regret to tell you that very many American lives have been lost. In addition, American ships have been reported torpedoed on the high seas between San Francisco and Honolulu.
Yesterday, the Japanese government also launched an attack against Malaya.
Last night, Japanese forces attacked Hong Kong.
Last night, Japanese forces attacked Guam.
Last night, Japanese forces attacked the Philippine Islands.
Last night, the Japanese attacked Wake Island.
And this morning, the Japanese attacked Midway Island.
Japan has, therefore, undertaken a surprise offensive extending throughout the Pacific area. The facts of yesterday and today speak for themselves. The people of the United States have already formed their opinions and well understand the implications to the very life and safety of our nation.
As commander in chief of the Army and Navy, I have directed that all measures be taken for our defense. But always will our whole nation remember the character of the onslaught against us.
No matter how long it may take us to overcome this premeditated invasion, the American people in their righteous might will win through to absolute victory.
I believe that I interpret the will of the Congress and of the people when I assert that we will not only defend ourselves to the uttermost but will make it very certain that this form of treachery shall never again endanger us.
Hostilities exist. There is no blinking at the fact that our people, our territory, and our interests are in grave danger.
With confidence in our armed forces, with the unbounding determination of our people, we will gain the inevitable triumph—so help us God.
I ask that the Congress declare that since the unprovoked and dastardly attack by Japan on Sunday, December 7th, 1941, a state of war has existed between the United States and the Japanese empire."

I put this in another post about Dec 7th but don't think it has been seen much, so I will put it here.

In remembrance of 1941, I have been going through my documents this morning and found a hand written letter from Marine General F C Rogers who had written to General Moore (Commanding General of Marine Aviation in the Pacific) (Ge. Moore was my sister-in0law's uncle) describing him taking the Japanese surrender "up north" (maybe Pelieleu). On the opposite side of the letter was a typed copy of Gen. Rogers VJ speech. This is the way he described Dec 7th.

"Approximately three years and nine months ago, we were a peace loving, self-satisfied, politically indifferent nation. We could have been compared to a prize fighter who had retired and let himself grow fat and lazy.

The Japs and Germans, like tough and coming fighter spotted our obvious poor condition and decided to go in an "take" the big fat man and then run the world to suit themselves. And the Japs, being what they are, hit first, below the belt, and before we even got into the ring, without knowing it did us the greatest possible favor. The low punch not only woke us up, that it made us so sore that we got wise to ourselves as well as our enemy. Our days of self-satisfaction were over. We were not in shape and we knew it. There was no time to go into training. We had to get in there and fight ourselves into condition. We did just that. It's true, we got cut up some, but we never stopped boring in and after the first tough round the fat began to melt, our timing came back, and we forged ahead. We won all the rounds from then on and on August 15 of this year our last enemy threw in the towel in order to avoid complete annihilation. WE WON. We finished this war not only in condition, but the World's Champion, and no person nor nation can deny us the title."

This was just part of the speech, but pretty much sums it up. I wonder now if we are getting fat and lazy again!

Chesty ..... Of all Gen. Moore's papers that I inherited, the ones where he expressed his care for his troops and the way they were treated, fed, clothed, and equipped are the most poignant ones. He absolutely raised hades when he knew his troops were not getting the same kind of rations that others were getting or were being short changed in any way. He also demanded that his wing and squadron commanders be accountable for their every action. He even got one General dismissed from the Corps for un-Marine like behavior in front of an ambassador and senator at a reception they attended. The General had too much to drink and he was retired for "medical" reasons. There were a lot of great leaders among that "greatest generation".

Truly sad indeed. My favorite pastime as Combat Veteran myself is to share a drink or two with some of the WW2 Vets, Korean War Vets, and Vietnam vets at my VFW Post here in Birmingham, Alabama. Some of the stories they tell are amazing, and the best part is their story of life after the war. Most of them swell with pride speaking of their grandchildren and in some cases great grandchildren. However, many of them are fading away in the pages of history and it's predicted that in the next 5-10 years there won't be any WW2 Veterans left and very few Korea and Vietnam Vets. I try to engage with as many as I can so that at least one person has heard their story. I don't know whether or not we will ever see a greater generation of Americans than from those three wars. As they say, "Hard Times Create Strong Men, Strong Men Create Good Times, Good Times Create Weak Men, Weak Men Create Hard Times".

MY family perspective. My parents were older than most because of the war. Each was engaged to others when the war started. They did not meet till after the war. Neither of their relationships lasted till the end of the war. Dad was a gunner in B-24's. His fiancee spent the money he sent home for their nest egg. Mom worked at Oak Ridge in payroll during the war. Moms fiancee returned from the Pacific after the war a changed man who decided marriage wasn't for him so they broke up.

My parents met a couple years after the war on a blind date. They fell in love and soon married. Dad died suddenly 20 years after the war. I was by his side when he passed from a heart attack. I was working with him that summer so he could teach me to get an education and not be a plumber like him. When he cam back from the war her got his solo pilots license and he is buried near the airport not far from our home. He always loved planes even after what he had been through in the war.

He had health problems resulting most likely from high altitude bombing missions. Smoking as everyone did then didn't help. He left my mom with 2 young boys. She was both mom and dad to us while working full time and having a great career with a major corporation. She instilled great values in us and while not wealthy we never wanted for anything.

She passed recently after living a rich full life and I am the last of our family left. We just lost mom in the fall due to age complications. She was breast cancer survivor and independent till the end when her body just gave out.

In going through her stuff I found their wedding pictures which I hadn't see in years. You could see the love in their eyes. They navigated the depression and the War and found true love and happiness together. The war ruined many lives but it gave me one of the greatest sets of parents one could have. I am the last of our little family left and every day I think of them and am grateful for them. It truly were part of the greatest generation

I SWORE AN OATH AGAINST ALL ENEMIES BOTH FOREIGN AND DOMESTIC... However, I consider America to be a Constitutional Republic and not a Democracy. A Democracy is majority rule, but a Constitutional Republic means a nation of laws which are set for and against a man with respect to basic civil liberties. In a Democracy, the majority can simply vote away the rights of a minority vote, but in a Constitutional Republic, it is impossible. The Architects of The Greatest Nation in the History of mankind had much foresight into the present day and beyond. It's what makes our nation great, but what makes our nation even more amazing are the men and women who are willing to risk it all to protect it.

They're called the greatest for a number of different reasons. They had an understanding of duty and the difference between liberty and freedom, they comprehended very well the idea that somethings are rightfully bigger than themselves. They understood too that that those things which were rightfully bigger than themselves were worth fighting, and even dying, for.

They are also called the greatest because of our short memories. We too often fail to consider the wars which preceded WWII. The folks associated the Revolution were pretty amazing in both thought and deed. But one cannot take away from The Greatest all they committed, accomplished and suffered.

My father was 19 and his brother 18 when they joined up. My father was a flight engineer on a B23. His pilot crashed the plane in training. Once he recovered they assigned him as a flight test engineer and he flew every type of plane used in WWII. He served in the Air Force until 1985.

My uncle Merrill had a wild experience. In his very first battle in Southern France he jumped out of the troop carrier/truck, took about ten steps, and a German stepped out from behind a large tree and shot him. in the leg. The pain was so intense that he passed out and rolled down a steep embankment to the bottom. The battle did not go well and when he woke up he quickly realized that he had been left for dead behind enemy lines. He played dead in a pile of other dead bodies as German troops checked the area. After they left he made a tourniquet for himself and hobbled off.
He spent months running and hiding from the Germans who figured out he was there and were trying hard to catch him. French people hid him and passed him around from house to house. They gave him enough medical attention to get him by and he eventually joined the French resistance because they were the most adept at hiding things. At one point he was hiding with a young wheat farmer and his wife. The wife went into labor and he delivered her baby because he was the only one around with birthing experience of any kind due to our family being dairy farmers. Meanwhile, at home, the army reported to my grandparents that he was MIA and presumed dead based on reports from the battle. Eventually, the US army took the village he was hiding in and he was able to come out of hiding and was sent home. Finding out he was still alive was probably the best day of my grandparent's life.
