How about this scenario/Brent Venables

How about Clemson wins the national championship at least once with Riley, and Brent Venables is eventually fired at Oklahoma. God forbid Brent does bad.
Oklahoma is going to be critical of their coach especially with BV’s first year there and them joining the SEC. How likely is the scenario of Oklahoma hiring Garett Riley as HC, and Brent Venables coming back to be the DC at Clemson?
Brent was the main piece in our championship run besides Dabo and whoever our QB was. Brent instantly brought change when he got here. Made the most improvement in the 2014 year 2 years into his Clemson career.
I may sound selfish of what a Clemson fan would want with Brent getting fired. He’s got a life to live, but it’s just my stupid opinion that he was more successful as a DC at Clemson. He’ll stick it out with Oklahoma, and I’m hoping the best for him.

Hopefully Riley ignites this offense and becomes coach in waiting.

as close to zero as possible.
He is going to come back to daddy Dabo with his tail between his leg.
Man has pride.

There’s no need to care about pride when you have the type of relationship they have, andby them both holding their faith. Maybe Goodwin will take this defense in an even better direction than Brent did, but that doesn’t seem possible with how great our defenses were under Brent.
Pride would have no place in this situation.

I believe most of us would welcome Skeletor back with open arms. However, I could see BV taking a break after OU if it doesn't work out much like Scott - probably head back to Clemson and hang out for a bit at the lake house.
That said, I am interested in seeing how Wes does in year 2. Personally, I think Wes just needs a little more seasoning. The defense did enough in most games to keep us in it much like the BV days -- even if it wasn't pretty at times (and let's not forget it wasn't always pretty with Brent, though, I certainly enjoyed BV rallying the troops and seeing the D pull it together in crunch time).
Also, one of the ideas I liked that I saw on the board that would be awesome to see would be for Wes to go upstairs and be the brain and (perhaps, if it makes sense) promote Nick E to co-coordinator for the physical presence setter on the sideline.

I think that would be amazing decision. I think Goodwin is going to be special. I think him overseeing things like "the mad scientist" would be great and Eason can fire up the guys down below. Is it too soon to use "the mad scientist" moniker?

Yes, it is too early. None of us saw anything brilliant last year on the defensive side of things. We had the most talent of any team in the country on that side and were average at best… stats prove it.

It was his first year, and you can’t really put too much pressure on our defense the last year. They were constantly gassed due to the offense. I think it played into long term season fatigue for the last 2 years with DJ. Just think about what all they had to do during the games to save us, and then add everyday of practice, and all of the preseason training. If we have an offense that can control a game and minutes, then Goodwin can adjust better.
Just curious. What is wrong with Wes’ presence on the field as well? I don’t like the idea of our defensive coordinator being away from our players. He seems to bring the energy, maybe not as intimidating as BV, but who was ever concerned about the DC’s appearance anyways?

We finished 29th in TOP last year at 31:39, we weren’t that gassed. We under performed on the D side. Just look back to 2017, the numbers are similar with KB and the defense balled out. Wes needs a great year to keep his job. He hasn’t shown anything that says he is even an average DC based on the talent he’s worked with last year.

How does Riley leaving for a HC position open up a spot for Venables?

It doesn’t I didn’t say it would.
It’d just be interesting if Oklahoma’s coach came here and Riley replaced him there. Garrett being the brother of Lincoln Riley (Former HC OK) and Venables coming back to his old school. Just a weird potential situation.

I don't want Brent to get fired, but I'd be the first one to throw him a BIG old party if he wanted to rejoin us.
That guy was the best Coordinator in the country, and best I've ever seen.
