Alcohol laws in Clemson?
Nov 11, 2013, 12:28 PM
|
|
I've wondered this for a while now and want to go ahead and ask...
I was told that there is a law in place (like a city ordinance maybe?) that allows alcohol to be drank publicly on campus on football Saturdays, but now that the game is on Thursday are there any new laws that I need to be aware of while tailgating?
And to clear my confusion, is there a law regarding this on football days, or can one simply drink alcohol on campus any day if they please?
Thanks

I am not aware of any laws making it legal to drink in public, even on game days. I think the law concerning drinking in public is relaxed on game days. I have been to the Thursday night games in Clemson in the past and it is just like any other tailgating you would find on a Saturday.

I think it actually has to do with public vs private property. Since campus is partly a private institution, drinking isn't illegal. (It may or may not be allowed by the school, but it isn't against the law). So open container on bowman = not illegal, downtown in the street = illegal.

anyone of age can consume alcohol on Clemson's campus at any time. This excludes stadiums and most of the buildings on campus, but outdoors is fair game.

not sure why you wouldn't be able to drink it on campus. Chili's doesn't give To-Go cups...

Anybody that has left the Esso, beer in hand, and crossed 93 directly in front of the state trooper directing traffic on any gameday knows this.

Now if you trip walking across Highway 93 coming out of Esso and spill your beer, well, you deserve to be locked up
Alcohol abuse!

The town of Clemson and CU are separate entities. The university is not located inside the town. It is my understanding that is actually chartered a a municipality with its own magistrate.

As long as your not acting like a complete a$$ and not walking through the middle of downtown Clemson with a beer I wouldn't sweat it!

The Administration finally allowed beer in the dorms, as I

recall in 1967, after clamoring from the students.
Funny thing was, few noticed any more overt drinking on the halls; those who had been doing so simply pulled their coolers out of closets. And kids in those days drank Buds...a few, PBR's...and even fewer, Old Mil's.
I don't recall lite beer being around, but you would have been laughed out of the dorms, if caught with such a thing. There weren't all these specialty types then either, and every beer-drinking kid had one highly-valued possession: a church key...metal can/bottle opener! lol
