Amazing how many folks are misconstruing the setup of the

Sep 3, 2022, 6:17 PM

proposed 12 team playoff! Talking about how the #12 team would get blown out by the #1 team! Do they not realize there would be no way for the #12 team to play #1, without first beating #5, then #4. I expect that scenario would be very rare!

Also, haven't we often heard the media pundits talk about there usually being a big gap between the top 2 or 3 teams and the next tier of teams? Also often saying there isn't much difference between #4 and the next 6 or 8 teams.

Considering this, we should get more good playoff games in the first round, since there may not really be that much difference between #5 and #12...certainly less than between #5 and #1.

We shall see.

I think the playoff expansion sucks

Should have limited to 8 teams, with 8v1, etc. Giving a bye week to the top 4 is a huge advantage, makes it kind of unfair.

Considering the outcome of the games

The 4 team playoff was working perfectly and more teams is not needed.

This is about money and nothing else.

I agree, I thought 8 was a good number, but 12 is what it's

going to be. I'm just saying, we may get some good games in the 5 vs 12, 6 vs 11 etc matchups...probably better than if 1 vs 8.

I Think It Creates Some Good Additional Games to Watch

But Unless You Get a Bye You Likely Are Not Going to Win it All

12 vs 5 or 12 vs 1 is basically semantics

the talent gap between 1-5 and 10-12 is, frankly, enormous. The beatdowns are going to get old, quickly.

So the top 4 get an extra week to heal and rest? Then a #12 Boise St plays a #5 UGA and the winner plays Bama who has rested all week and watched the game tape?

So, what is a better option? Go to 16 teams and #1 plays #16

Sep 3, 2022, 7:03 PM

I thought 8 was plenty, but that would probably have been just another round added to what we have now...no guarantee of conference winners getting in, probably a bigger percentage of the teams coming from the SEC. This 12 team scenario with top six conference champs guaranteed a spot, is probably the best we can hope for.

Personally, I would love to have a max of three teams from any one conference, but the SEC would never agree to that! Greedy Skanky will still be politicking to get six SEC teams in most years!

Unless I am interpreting the format wrong there is a way #12 could play #1 in the first round. The format says that the top 4 ranked CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS get a buy. What if every conference champion lost at least one regular season game and what if Notre Dame has the most difficult regular season schedule and blows everyone away and is ranked #1. ND should be ranked #1. However, since ND is not in a conference they will not be one of the 4 teams to receive a buy the first week. This also means that ND will always have to play in the first first and will never get a bye.

It is also possible for #12 to play #2. If #1 is the SEC champion (Georgia) and #2 is the SEC loser (Alabama) then #12 has to play #2 Alabama.

NO...#12 couldn't play #1 before the 3rd round, and couldn't

Sep 3, 2022, 7:12 PM

meet #2 unless both made the finals. Now, I agree that your scenario with Notre Dame is possible, with them being ranked #1, but being dropped to the #5 slot since they wouldn't be a conference champ.

Similar to last year, when UGA would have been placed in the #5 slot, since they lost their CCG. So last year, the #12 team would have met the #2 ranked team, but not the #2 seeded team.
