Any Diesel Mechanics or Knowledgable TNetters?

May 29, 2022, 12:30 PM

I'm thinking about making an offer on a 2004 Ford F-350 Dually with a 6.0L Turbo diesel for the farm. The problem is that it was running but has been sitting for 2 years. My question is, what is it going to take to get it started besides battery and good fuel?

I consider meself a Knowledgable TNetter, but all I can

offer on Diesel Mechanics is that, in my experience growing up on the farm, diesel tractors or trucks survived downtime far better than gasoline versions of same.

For me, the rally killer would be that four letter word in the name, F-O-R-D.

:)

Yes with F O R D being the killer for me also, but most all diesel engines are about the same, unless the engine was made by Mack engines, about everything is different with them.

And you're right about diesels are less effected from sitting up than a gasoline engine. Gas engines need a spark to fire up, and to keep them running, and all that system can go bad from sitting up for long periods. But a diesel will fire up if it isn't to cold outside because they start and stay running from massive compression igniting the fuel in the cylinder. But, they are hard to start when it's cold without working Glow Plugs, Glow plugs make cold starting much much easier, and some will use a blast of Ether. But never use Ether unless there is no other choice bc it can cause a compression lockup of the engine, and you will have to wait until that compression leaks down, and that can take awhile:) BUT,

He should change the fuel filter/filters if it has more than one fuel filter, and change the air filter before he even tries to start the engine, and with some, the fuel filter will need to be full of diesel fuel when putting it back on. I've never had a light duty diesel pickup trucks, or a passenger diesel car, but I do know that with heavy equipment diesel engines, the fuel filters has to be filled with clean diesel fuel before putting it back on!!!

All diesels are NOT the same...hard to beat the Cummins in

the Rams...especially the ones prior to 2008, when it was the 5.9 without all the catalytic converter and DEF crap that is on the newer ones. I had a 2003 that would get 27 mpg going 75 mph on the interstate. I would still have it, but decided to trade it for a 4 wheel drive 2008 6.7 liter, which is fine once I got the catastrophic converter crap off it. I have 320,000 miles on it, and it still runs like a new one!

Some of those Fords are trouble. Do your homework.

Make sure it’s been bulletproofed…

Don’t buy it. Ford’s 6.0L is crap. I have friends using them in construction and on the farm and all had issues with the engines.

If it wil start, fire it up and get it warm - keep an eye on fuel pressure and temperature. Once it's warm, change the oil and coolant. Check the belts and hoses for cracks.... change any that look suspicious or all of them for good measure. Make sure the alternator is working. Check the tailpipe for excess smoke. Enjoy!

There is a considerable aftermarket out there now for

"Chipping" diesel pickups, radically altering the fuel delivery profile. MUCH more power, and MUCH more SMOKE! (Black smoke, not blue. I have yet to see a situation where "blue' smoke out of an automotive type exhaust is not bad.)

My son had a 6.0 L for about 10 yrs. The 6.0l isa money pit. I would run out of space here telling you all the problems. If you get it for free, expect to spend 10-15k just to get a semi reliable truck.
He now has the 6.7L f 250 Ford and I have a baby Duramax 3.0 l. Both have been great so far.

Thanks for all your input. I was already concerned about it being a Ford and the 6.0 diesel. Now I am leaning more towards passing on this one. I have diesel tractors and UTV but none have ever sat longer than a couple month and usually fire right up. Right now I have a Chevy Silverado 1500 V8 (gas) I use for pulling the tractor and hay trailers but was looking for something with more ummph for hauling the heavier loads. I really didn't want to spend $60,000+ for a new one and don't need a new money pit either. One of them is sitting beside me. ??

Have you ever seen anything here that makes you think anyone of us is knowledgeable -- about anything? ;)
