Understanding Recruiting

I commented earlier on our 24 recruiting class and that I didn't think it was a top 10 class, and as I predicted people blasted me. So, let me clarify my statement. I will stand by what I said, but will explain it like this, as of NOW I don't feel it's a top 10 class, although I feel it is really good and has potential to be excellent. What some don't comprehend is that the real judge of a recruiting class comes 2-4 years after they sign. There are many guys RIGHT NOW, that are 3 star guys that may be 5 Star talent by the time they are juniors or seniors. It's called DEVELOPMENT. Prime example ETN might be the best RB in school history, but was a 3 star guy out of HS. He developed and went from a speed guy, to a complete back that could run with power and speed, as well as developed into a very good receiving option. So, yes I like this class and feel it's really really good, no I don't think it's "ELITE", but I think the real story is a couple of years away.

too much is made of stars imo. And there are plenty of 5 stars that are poison to a program. Dabo has been killing it on recruiting since he was a position coach.

That's kinda my point. You don't really know what you've got for a couple of years with most of these kids. Sure there are some Sammy Watkins that walk in day 1 and are stellar, but most need to be developed and it becomes as much about work ethic and character as it is about talent.

Well....it's not top 10. It's 11 on the composite. Your not saying anything that the recruiting services haven't said already.
Etienne was 4-star.

Yes, that's the only one that had him 3 star. 247, ESPN, and On3 all had him as 4 star.
He was a consensus 4-star across all recruiting services. I'm not sure why you are focused on the one lowest rating he received instead of the overall average/consensus which is the typical accepted measurement.

No one said it should be a top 10 class. Issue was the idiocy of the 247 writer.
No one blasted you for your opinion. I took issue with you stating because you played college football that means you know more about the game than anyone who hasn't.

Just because they dont communicate their understanding well
Feb 10, 2024, 7:15 AM

on TV, it doesn’t mean that they don’t have the knowledge.
I don’t see how watching a bunch of games and being super interested in it is enough to overcome not playing it at that level.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s possible, but I think it’s fair to assume that someone who played college football probably knows more.

I think we got caught up in chasing stars for a few years, instead of looking for guys who were a good fit for the program, which had been a winning formula for Dabo for years. I think we need to get back to a good mix of elite recruits and good cultural fits with guys who will be happy to stick around 4-5 years. We aren't cut out to be a football Inc type of program like GA or Alabama.

First of all, it’s not recruiting, it’s bidding and ultimately you get what you pay for based upon what you can afford. Keep it in perspective. There needs to be another ranking of classes based on value

In today's world of NIL and the portal is there a DEVELOPMENT factor? How many of these athletes will be willing to stay with their original school and be "developed"?

untrue. most of our guys stay. I'm excluding guys who graduate and move on, and of the others the OVERWHELMING majority didn't see significant playing time. Makuba and Collins are the only two starters I can remember ever transferring out.

60-65% of each class IS MOST.....i never said it wasn't "most"

but we lose 8-10 to portal each year (each of the past 5-6 years)........that's roughly 33-42% of ONE class that leaves to portal, so that leaves 58-67% that decides to stay.

There is much more of a "win now" mentality with the fact that players can move freely.
The nearly 100% avoidance of the recruiting from the portal means that's a one way street out of Clemson for players that are developed but don't want to stay for whatever reason.
That means it requires getting more players that have to be developed to replace the losses.
It's not a formula to be elite again in the new world of college football.

Why do people keep saying that ETN was a 3* out of high school?? It is like an old fable that never goes away. He was a highly rated 4 star and the 15th best RB rated nation wide, rushing for almost 2,500 yards and 39 TD's as a senior.

featuring that "Stars don't matter" theme that misinformed fans insist is true. Despite mountains of evidence to the contrary, it only takes the brief mention of an extremely rare exception to the rule, like HR to solidify this false conviction–

If I remember right, some services had him listed as a high 3-star or a low 4-star.
If anything, this is the first time I've read he was a highly regarded 4-start RB. Either way, folks remember the lower-rated service and last-minute offer from Clemson so it just adds to the lore

The rankings are based on evaluations and potential. NONE of them have played.

Please give your evaluations of the at least 10 other programs that you think are better and why. And why the ranking services are wrong in their assessments.

Dabo's most "elite" recruiting classes just went 10-3, 11-3 and 9-4.
Elite talent without player development doesn't produce elite football teams.
I like the class.

You can usually separate the top 2-3 team's classes. Is there really that much difference in teams 4-8? 9-12? 13-20? An 11 overall puts us in line with our Natty teams base rankings. Plus 2025 has the potential to be higher.
A friend, even though UGA fan, once said the rankings don't matter until they run out on the field, or down the hill in our case!

247 is run by a coot, if you clue in you will see they always put us lower & predict a downfall. They are consistent, go back to 2014-2024, you’ll see a pattern, compare rivals or other sites.
Look how they rate our baseball teams even during our best seasons.

I’d like to know more about how his agenda is carried out.

Clemson proved in 2015 and 2016 that you don't need top 10 recruiting classes. They did a great job of player evaluation. They hit on most of the 4-5 star players and found some great 3 stars. Having talent evenly distributed throughout the roster is important as well. Stars do matter. If you recruit at the level that GA does you have more room for mistakes. Having great QB play is a big equalizer. Clemson has recruited a bunch of 4 stars on the O line that haven't panned out. If you have a few classes with a bunch of misses you will fall behind real fast.

As good as ETN was, I have to somewhat disagree with you concerning him being a complete back. Travis never learned to block. He either did not want to or learn to protect his qb. The last back we had that would take on a M1A1 Abrams blitzing was Wayne Gallman.
