Birmingham BBQ?

I'm going to start a consulting job in Bham Monday and it seems like there are a lot of great BBQ choices. Most sites have Saw's ranked as #1. There is a Saw's BBQ, Saw's Soul Kitchen, and Saw's Juke Joint. Anyone ever eaten there?
There is also a Rodney Scott's, a Dreamland BBQ, and a Jim & Nick's.

I know you're joking, but I had Maurice's

on Devine Street a week or so ago and it was almost entirely inedible.
Flavorless, dry ribs. Awful wings. Cold, greasy mac and cheese.
The bagged fried okra was the only edible thing in the deal.
I did save some mustard sauce to use on a more edible product. Wasn't wasting it on the ribs or wings, that's for sure.

We are talking about BBQ, not ribs/wings/macaroni/okra. Try to keep up, son.
Also, the yeller sauce is good enough to shove your wanker in. It's that good.

Not sure why, just never have been. Would much rather have Carolina or Dukes. Want to go try Freeman’s in Beech Island. Have heard good things but not had it.

in the late 70s. Freeman's was great and I think their sauce was hot sauce based, ouch.

My son attended university in BHam so spent a fair amount of time there. SAWs BBQ at the original place is top notch. Its actually located in Homewood... that is a little suburb of BHam. The place is small and a hole in the wall... which is perfect for the best BBQ. I will agree that Maurice's is nothing to write home about... SAW's is.
The story is online, but the name SAW is short for Sorry A$$ Wilson. Mr Wilson was a ne'er do well college student in NC. He started the place and the name just stuck. He passed away a few years ago but the BBQ remains true to when he was alive. Don't expect atmosphere. Its paper lined baskets with plastic utensils. Wilson was a dead head and they sell shirts with a pig and the "steal your face" logo on the front.
Highest recommendation for the Homewood original joint.

Saws is the best in town. Pro-tip: the original location in Homewood is the only one with ribs (I believe). Saw's Soul Kitchen's specialty is pork and greens over grits. It is fantastic. Lots of people love Saw's burgers, but they don't do it for me.
If you want an old school Alabama BBQ experience, check out Ms. Myra's. The food is excellent and they are the one of the few (maybe the only) Birmingham spot that has done white sauce for a long time. Carlisle's would be another old school experience, although their burgers are better than the BBQ.
Dreamland is fine. Ribs are good and the Bham location has a good atmosphere, but it's a Tuscaloosa place that has franchised out. Full Moon is good local chain. Golden Rule is another, though I like Full Moon better. Martin's and Rodney Scott's aren't local, but are both good. Moe's BBQ is a larger chain but their wings and BBQ nachos are both worth a stop.
Birmingham's food scene is top notch. Enjoy your time here.
