Brownell: A good Guy in a tough job.

Mar 9, 2013, 1:24 PM

The main source of our problems are the 2 empty recruiting years we had at the end of the OP years and the beginning of BB. OP's most hearlded class was the 1 with baby booker and jennings. These 2 guys stayed and they were OK but not what we thought we were getting. No way MJ is a 5 star and Devin could not live up to his Brother. The rest of the class was crap and they bolted. BB's first year would up with no one since OP bolted late in the game. So after Stitt and Grant graduated we were left with a collection of role players and freshmen.

Clemson has never been able to recruit the guys who are studs right out of High School. We have to grow our playes and hope they can play by the time they are juniors and seniors. This year we had 2 seniors...2 decent playes but not guys who could lead the team. Our best recruit could not play due to injury and one of our sophs who showed promise ar the end of last year Coleman was also lost for the season. Sapp leaves the program suddenly and KJ McD misses the last few games.

I am in favor of giving Brownell some time to develop there players. Our program partly a victim of circumstances and firing BB is not going to fix that.

we likely will struggle again next season but hopefully the next season when we are junior senior laden we will be pretty good.

while I agree Coleman only had three years to clean up the mess she inherited. not saying the clock should be the only thing maybe there are issues of indivual style and leadership that impact the decisions but as much as I like BB we are not in a good place recruiting wise, size wise and proven playability wise. he better be pulling some rabbits out of hats. New AD's like their hires running programs unless they are on solid ground which hoops isnt

didn't mean to imply it did. just looking at two bad programs and struggles and wondering how a cut is made. I'm for keeping BB and was for firing coleman but BB is on a slippery slope

Brownell gets two more years period. Then we can all make our judgments on his performance. He did come into a bad situation, but he knew that when he took the job. We all know Clemson basketball is challenging and that is the only reason I say give him two more years. I am not sure we can do much better than Brownell at this point. It isn't exactly a job people are excited about. I think we will have some talent next year, but I have no clue what kind of production we will get on the inside. Nnoko has no offensive skills as far as I am concerned. As much as I like how hard Rod Hall plays, if that is the best we can do at point, we are in deep trouble. He struggles to make layups and his jump shot is awful. I do think it will be addition by subtraction when it comes to Milton Jennings.

Just my opinion, but I think it is a fantasy to think that

we can "develop" our way above mid-pack in the ACC. It's living in denial.

Again, other teams in the ACC rely very heavily on freshmen and sophomores, getting lots of minutes and points from them. Some are led by freshmen and sophomores. They didn't have to wait 3 years for these players to develop; they are good NOW. And yes, while our young players will get better and develop, so will theirs, the ones that are already better than our young players.

We may never recruit like UNC or Dook, at least not any time soon; but we absolutely must recruit much better than we are now, and I do believe we can do that.

I just hope that Blossomgame and Rooks are as good are better than billed. It will have to start with better players, and I hope they are it.
