Cade Klubnik

Does anybody get the feeling Cade is another Bo Nix?

Not saying Cade will transfer, but it took Bo Nix forever to figure it out, but when he did he put absolutely everything together.

I think Cade’s issue is just performance anxiety. I think it was that way with DJ as well. Because you saw DJ change in confidence as he went through his career. Meaning the root of his issues back to Georgia in Charlotte was likely that pressure weighing on him.

This is a harder thing to overcome for most people. Especially young guys nowadays. This pressure clouds Cade’s knowledge of his own abilities. I see Cade make some plays that make me reminisce of Deshaun Watson. He has the abilities, just not the calmness of mind and poise that Deshaun had. That is what made Deshaun special. There was no need to work on his mental game.

When you have as much of a care free mindset like Deshaun in college, you are able to be so confident in your talent that nothing affects you. A turnover here and there is something, but it doesn’t get it in your head.

Basically, we have another QB that has a mental state that is progressing, but not fully there yet. Just play loose Cade. You have it, if you turn it over it is not the end of the world if you’re playing your best for the rest of the entirety of the game. Overcome the fear of turnovers.

I'm reserving full judgement until Cade is 100% healthy, the OL improves and the WRs make some plays.

I don't think Cade and Nix are comparable. Nix was always more of a runner than passer. He's put up good numbers in Eugene. He isn't an NFL QB. Cade may not be either but it's too early to tell.

I see throws from Cade that are NFL caliber but he makes too many bad decisions right now. I don't know how many of those are b/c he can't process what he sees, doesn't have time in the pocket or desperation. Hopefully the Tigers can field a functional and healthy OL with some difference making WRs. Then, we'll see who Cade can be.

He said once before that he has trouble seeing over the linemen. When I mentioned that in a similar thread weeks ago I asked whether or not we could scheme for that. Crickets

If a college quarterback has difficulty seeing over the offensive line during plays, there are several ways to scheme the offense to help him:

1. Adjust the offensive line: The offensive line can be adjusted to create passing lanes for the quarterback. This can be done by using taller offensive linemen or by adjusting their positioning to create gaps for the quarterback to see through.

2. Utilize shotgun formations: By using shotgun formations, the quarterback starts the play a few yards behind the line of scrimmage, giving him a better view of the field. This can help him see over the offensive line and make better decisions.

3. Implement rollouts and bootlegs: Rollouts and bootlegs involve the quarterback moving outside the pocket after the snap. This can help create better sightlines for the quarterback, as he can see the field more clearly from the edge of the pocket.

4. Design plays with quick reads: Designing plays that involve quick reads and shorter routes can help the quarterback make faster decisions and get the ball out of his hands before the offensive line becomes an issue. This can also help mitigate the impact of his height disadvantage.

5. Use play-action passes: Play-action passes involve faking a handoff to the running back before the quarterback drops back to pass. This can help freeze the defense and create more time and space for the quarterback to see over the offensive line.

6. Provide clear passing lanes: Coaches can design passing plays that create clear passing lanes for the quarterback. This can involve using crossing routes, rub routes, or pick plays to create separation for receivers and open up throwing windows for the quarterback.

Have we seen any of this?

More rollouts, but the problem with that is he only sees half the field.

Well, by only giving half the field, you reduce the chance of turnover by 50%

Tell him to focus on one side of the field and throw it away or run it if there is nothing.

It’s not good to throw back across the field anyways, so these do need to be more included.

I think Cades biggest problem is he has no help on the outside. If you gave him a Ross/Tee/Sammy/Nuk/Renfrow he would probably look a lot different. How many times did Deshaun or Trevor hit a screen pass that got taken to the house?? The kid needs playmakers to help take some of that pressure away.

People have such a delusion about how those teams were. They seriously act like Deshaun and Trevor did it all by themselves. Those teams had playmakers all over the field making it easier for the QB to showcase his talent. You don’t have to press when you have a handful of guys who can take it 6 at any given moment.

Exactly!!! It drives me crazy how people don’t remember how it actually happened. Deshaun made some terrible throws/decisions but he never lost confidences just like Cade is able to keep it together. The biggest difference is that Cade doesn’t have those dogs in playmaker positions. Once he can get those I think Cade can be amazing just like he had at every level of football until now.

I'm highly confident that it is his RB and WR options

When Phil Mafah plays. The offense moves. But They can't score in the red zone because they have zero WR threats outside of a crossing route up the middle - that disappears when you have less than 5 yards to go.

When Will Shipley plays, the offense doesn't really move that much. This was true with DJ and CK.

these are observations and slightly biased takes -- at the end of the day. the stats do not negate my assertions

in other words -

if the RB is SH1P -> defense just attack up the middle with everything. SH1P cannot break out to the side for anything and just keep your LB spying in the middle and you'll stop Tyler Brown or Jake Brinningstool from crossing

if the RB is Mafah -> you can't spy because Mafah will lateral move and break through a hole. You better hope your DBs have good 1 on 1 coverage on WR, which they usually do because our WRs don't general make plays on 50/50 balls

in more words - Mafah offers options but in the red zone those options really disappear becauses the defense is so scrunched

While you probably are correct about Cade’s surrounding support system, it’s plausible that he ALSO has anxiety on the field.

And not having the best support probably will raise the pressure even more.

In the OP I said that this team has everything it needs.

Why do you sit there and say this when the 2 best teams we’ve played, we played our best games.

I completely agree that better support obviously will help, but what we have now can work every week because it did against FSU and ND. Take away miscues, and we win comfortably against ND and beat FSU in regular time.

The explanation for the bad losses MUST be something mental in more than one player, not just Cade.

We just came off a win vs ND and it seems to be a little more up, but this is just a reflection of the season.

I mean, Ohio State barely beat ND. Probably got lucky with some calls to do it.

There’s just must be many mental factors that play into this situation of Clemson playing well against ND and FSU, and not against worse teams.

I agree about the performance anxiety with Cade. I think the coaches realize it too. He gets nervous waiting on the play to come in and before the snap, especially after a big play. I noticed when we were trying to run the clock in the 4th quarter Saturday they kept bringing Cade to the sideline between plays. I said at the time this was to keep him occupied and not just standing there getting nervous between snaps. We also called a timeout Saturday that I think was totally to calm Cade down in the red zone. I know some here say the coaches don’t see this stuff but I think they see it and managed it a little more than they had been on Saturday.

I do think Cade’s anxiety is different from DJ’s. I think DJ was actually worried about screwing up so bad that he talked himself into it. I think Cade’s is more just being excited than being worried or scared. I think he gets overly excited and loses focus.

Well if he’s got any performance anxiety, the coaches likely immediately noticed it at the start. That’s a thing that couldn’t really go over the coaches’ heads.

One thing that also gets overlooked with Cade (and others) is he face very little, if any, on the field adversity in high school. Everything he did on the field just worked. He wasn't perfect but he and his team just out talented and executed everybody, all the time. He's learning what he can do at this level. He's got some growing to do but some of the things he did in high school and even early this season, he's let go. Remember how often he just ran backwards Madden style in the Orange Bowl? Haven't seen him do that in weeks. This injury he has upped his athletic mortality. He's had to die in the pocket a couple of times (the big sack against ND) b/c he just can't run away from them. He is learning. He is going from a thrower/play maker to a QB. It will payoff. The light is flickering and I hope it burns bright for him and Clemson.

1. I think Bo Nix is far more talented than CK. It took him awhile to put it together, but his ceiling was way higher than Cade's.

2. I think that Cade continues to take the approach that he can out-athlete his competition - and at this level he cannot. When he figures out that his greatest room for improvement is between his ears (calmness, see the whole field, pre-read the defenses, making good choices) then we might see some real improvement. But it is also possible that he never gets it.

What is your reasoning for why Bo Nix has a much higher ceiling than Cade?

Cade was a 5-star and won the Elite 11. Bo Nix was a 4-star and did not.

In fact, Bo had a lot of his hype because of his legacy and his name.

How do you come up with that?
