Can anyone who watched the USC-Ute game

Oct 16, 2022, 12:07 AM

Explain why they added time to the clock at the end instead of taking it away on that long interception return that got called back? It seemed pretty obvious that whatever sort of inadvertent clock stoppage could have been worked out in a replay. In reality it gave USC at least one additional play.

Defensive penalty so the play is "over" at that point. The time taken off of the clock for the interception return wouldn't have happened without the penalty. Therefore, time goes back on the clock. Same thing happened with A&M vs Bama but they didn't put time back on the clock and that missed time was called out afterwards. A&M should have had at least 6 seconds instead of the 3 they were given.

There was an inadvertent whistle during the return. The ball is dead so the clock should have stopped.

But why does an inadvertent whistle favor a specific team?

I didn’t really see the USC offense quit on the play, and it was pretty easy to determine what the clock should have said. In this case, USC got the interception back, got the yardage and the first down, got the clock stopped AND a couple of seconds back as a bonus. Pretty big whistle+ oops.

Yeah, that was a real head scratcher

Sounded like they said someone called a timeout DURING THE INTERCEPTION RETURN.

Seemed to me they maybe should have taken a couple of additional seconds OFF the clock.

They Must Have Been Using ACC Refs

Only they can make such horrid errors

It appeared to be a situation which might result in...

the game ending with a defensive penalty which is, by rule, not legal. The confusion was because one ref inadvertently stopped the clock, I assumed that rule caused his to do that.

I think the clock should have run but a 10 second addition to it should have been added after the penalty assessed. That brought about mistake #2, resetting the clock to 13 seconds when the ref had stopped it.

I do not believe it changed the outcome of the game and I'm satisfied with that.

It was unlike the puntrooskie when Bowden was granted a time out he didn't have which allowed him to put his FG team on the field, neither of those clocks should not have been stopped by the refs. Resetting it after the play didn't change the game like that FSU game those years ago.
