That’s not as good of a job as Clemson.
Is the pay there that much different than what we pay?

Great campus, nice facilities, and good place to retire. Clemson is beautiful, but Coral Gables is pretty nice as well. Excellent food and weather, no state income tax. Maybe he just wants to coast into retirement for a few years.

...and no state property tax either. My grandparents leased a small campsite year-round in FL years ago primarily to spend a few months away from the "harsh" SC winters. That allowed them to have FL license tags on their cars and camper and they paid $0 in property taxes each year.

Based on what I can tell, he makes just under $1 million a year at Clemson.
The highest paid AD at the moment is the guy at Texas, who makes $2.4 million.
Miami is throwing some serious money at this. It would be hard to turn down that kind of raise.

Change in philosophy
Dec 3, 2021, 8:06 PM

The former AD put alot of $ into the medical school and not the football program. It's resulted in a $450 Mill wind fall for the U. The board has approved a 30 Mill increase into the football program.
Most on this board might not understand it takes $ to win. I know we all believe in it was the culture but you have to understand.
Clemson spends 35 percent of the athletic budget on football. Some schools it's 20 percent. He's going to build the football program. That's why kiffen is interested.
Gamecocks only spend 20 percent. So you see what you get. No money, no wins.

How does an athletic director put money into a medical school
Dec 3, 2021, 9:28 PM
|
|
and not the athletic program?!?
It seems to me that the university tells the athletic director how much money he has to manage for his department, and he disperses it as he sees fit (with board approval of course).
The AD shouldn’t have any authority (or desire) to take athletic money and give it to an academic program.

DRad's only hire has been Monte Lee.
Can he make a good hire if his back is against the wall??
We don't know!!! We did not know at GT in Atlanta.
He did not have the Ball$$$ to fire Brownell. Should have been done years ago IMO.
He is a good bricks and mortal AD. Can really spend $$$$$.

I am glad that I am not the only one that doesn't think that he has really done anything special. Don't get me wrong I do not think that he has done badly. I just think that his job has been pretty easy after what Terry Don Phillips left him, namely Dabo. When the primary program, that Radacovich just had to avoid screwing with, goes to 6 straight playoffs, does anybody pay attention to the good or bad things that you do?

This would be one of thoose times. More money, reported 3M vs 800K; Living in Miami (a lot of people would find that attractive, even if you don't); plus he has history and friends in Miami. No confounding mystery here, if true.

Why am I clueless to wonder why running Miami’s athletic department

seems like a lateral move at best compared to running Clemson’s?
Since I started this thread, I learned that DRad would more than triple his salary there compared to what he makes at Clemson. That’s very relevant here, and that’s the kind of info I was looking for - as opposed to your ridiculous “you’re clueless” response.
Do better.

Then we could look forward to peace on the basketball board for--oh, six months--before y'all start calling on the next AD to fire the next coach.

All depends on how you look at it. Many CEO types enjoy building a business, but don't like the stress of trying to keep one on top. Expectations are a lot lower at the U.

I’m with you brother. They’ve done so many good things together. Strange to me he’d want to move on unless he just loved that area. I get the taxes thing too.

I’m curious why Miami is interested in him.

My post is not intended to be critical of our AD. Just listing some key points. Then looking at Miami’s issues, and trying to understand the why?
DRad- Excellent Fun Raiser? At Clemson, recently I would think it would be fair to say money has been good. The COVID year I am sure hurt, but I don’t think it crippled the athletic department. I will say raising money is easy when you are winning in football.
DRad- Facility construction and Improvement projects seem to have been completed on time. So that’s a plus.
Key coaching hires, at Clemson, Baseball. Some would say this has not worked out. He has kept our Bball coach. I am not trying to open that debate, but you can’t say that is a win. I will offer it’s not a huge loss. At best it’s neutral, with the statement he did not hire Brownell. Football, Dabo was already on staff. He has supported Dabo with money to hire great staff.
He seems personable, and is willing to do the other assignments, CFP committee which I think are helpful. I think there are 2 other non Clemson committee type jobs he has participated in, but I can’t remember specifics. I think he has ears all over the country to help understand how a department or conference needs to position itself.
When I look at Miami. Baseball facilities recently improved in 2019. Basketball is in a building that was built 2003. So less than 20 years old. Football, they play in the NFL stadium. Sounds like they need to hire a football coach. Basketball coach is fine. Baseball?
On the surface it appears Miami should be looking for a AD that knows how to evaluate and hire a Football and Baseball coach. DRads tenure at Clemson does not support that.
Thinking outside the box, Miami football has not been relevant since they moved out of the Orange Bowl. Maybe Miami is rethinking that decision and is contemplating building their own football stadium. Now that seems like something that is in alignment with DRads resume. Especially since he has experience working in cities like Atlanta and DC. But given how they are going about the process of hiring a AD and football coach, it does not seem like there is a vision or rough plan to support that.
I would place Miami in a desperate column. Seems like they are grasping. Given how important football is to funding the Athletic department, the AD would have a large say in the selection of a football coach. So if I was DRad, this would raise my eyebrow. Hiring a new AD should come first. Then the football coach. When D Rad came to Clemson, Dabo was in place. But I think given how Dabo performed he could pull the trigger on him after 2 years if it did not work out.
That said, if Miami is offering big money, take it. Rumors are 3 mil a year. I have to think he is pretty set living a high quality lifestyle after 2-3 years. Regardless if he is successful or not.

That’s not as good of a job as Clemson.
Is the pay there that much different than what we pay?
Perhaps read Hood’s story on the front page before asking a question?

You always entertain interest. Worst case scenario it may result in a pay raise.
