These ratings are updated for Nielsen results thru this past season. The ratings are organized by logo left to right, top to bottom. So yes Clemson had the highest ratings just ahead of ND since 2016.

Things to note, Clemson had big tv matchups against 9 of these 17 other teams over that time period. So you could argue the ratings are highly boosted by conference championship and CFP games, and whether the viewership was more about the opponents. Still this is an average so regular season noon games on ABC regional telecasts are built into the numbers.

I’d also argue this does validate Clemson’s national brand appeal when you consider the interest by other fan bases to tune in to see their teams play Clemson. Lastly, the Tigers absolutely must keep winning conference and CFP games to maintain relevance because prime Nielsen broadcast windows for ACC teams are going to become scarce with ESPN/ABC promoting their SEC product.

We have definitely offered a significant ratings bump over the years, and our home venue is easily one of the top locations to showcase on television. This is the type of metric that really drives our value from a media standpoint, the powers behind the leagues, moreso than geography or TV market size.

Go Tigers!

A few things really skew the numbers. Some teams played up to 3 games more per season than other teams. Also, any CFP game is gonna be higher than any other bowl game. Alabama probably benefits the most from this. Next is probably Clemson. Ohio State to a little lesser extent. Then maybe Georgia. And this is not to take anything away from any of the teams. They earned it.

Pretty interesting observation

They classify Texas and Oklahoma as SEC and Washington, USC (the real one), and Oregon as B1G. They have yet to play a down for either of those conferences, let alone the last 7-8 years

They also have ND as ACC.***

I believe he did that to simplify the color coding. ND is an ACC school, and the others are moving to their new conference in large part because of these tv ratings. The point really is who draws eyeballs regardless of conference affiliation. Yes, the extra playoff games boost the numbers, but they are per game averages, so all those regular season games where Nielsen ratings existed are factored in as well.

It’s not an average. Alabama doesn’t have 800 million viewers a game. It’s total people who watched the team for those years. So extra games matter.
So do playoff games.

The data on this chart is all that matters to TV Execs that cut checks to conferences. All the other nonsense that talking heads bring up with realignment - AAU membership, quality of non-revenue generating sports, etc. - is just dicta.
