CFP Champions Playoff Bracket

1

Jan 11, 2023, 8:36 AM

Open discussion:

2018 Clemson, 2019 LSU, 2020 Alabama, 2022 UGA.

Arguably the best 4 championship teams of the CFP era thus far.

If these 4 teams were in a playoff, how would the seeding shakeout? Who makes the championship game? Who wins it all? Are there any other championship teams you’d put in the top 4 other than these?

It would be an interesting matchup to see our 2018 team against Georgia's current team. Our offense that year against UGA's current defense. Though equally interesting would be our defense from that year and whether we could have stopped Stetson Bennett. My money would be on our D from that year. We had the horses on defense across the board that certainly TCU didn't have.

Though of course LSU's team from 2019 was one of the most prolific teams I have ever seen when they got going.

I agree with you there. Of those 4, I think LSU would probably be the 1 seed just off of offensive firepower. I’d probably have 2018 Clemson number 2 and you could really have UGA and Alabama 3 or 4

agreed

That LSU team was an amazing compilation of talent. It was such a great team that a horrible head coach (Orgeron) couldn't screw it up.

LSU got away with holding our receivers and our DLs all game long. The PAC-12 officials were terrible.
The offensive pass interference call on Mike Williams, in the 4th quarter was a bad call -- the defender was falling down. It shld hv been reviewed. No way did Williams push the defender down. (That cost us a TD and momentum.)

The PAC!-12 zebras wore yellow and purple shades.

UGA isn't even in the discussion

I posted about this topic earlier...

"The top teams in college football are drastically down compared to a few years ago.

Kirby's beating a field that's not nearly as good now. Bama's not as good, Clemson's not as good, Ohio State's not as good, no LSU team, etc....

UGA is like the tallest dwarf. TCU was the worst team to ever make a CFP title game.

There's no comparison."

2022 UGA was better than everyone else, but they didn't beat any great teams. They also weren't mowing down the competition the way the aforementioned teams did prior to the NIL and transfer portal.

You make a great point. Competition was definitely down this year. Who would you have in the 4th spot instead of UGA?

Thanks, but I was just shooting from the hip based on what I've watched on the television over the past two seasons.

I'd be hard pressed not to put one of the Clemson teams that lost (like 2019) or a Bama team we beat (like 2018) in there.

I still think there's a gap between those Clemson and 'Bama teams vs. UGA's teams now. Clemson and 'Bama faced better competition to get there, and were more consistently dominant.

I'm not convinced that TCU was even as good as the Michigan State team, Washington, ND, Ohio State, or even any of the Oklahoma teams that got steamrolled in the semifinals.
