Chad Morris on being "vanilla and conservative"
Aug 30, 2014, 11:21 PM
|
|
I asked Chad Morris about the playcalling in the second half, and he admitted it was conservative. He said Clemson was backed up in their own end, and he didn't want the offense to make a big mistake and lose the game on a turnover.

He put the defense in a position to lose the game by being worn out because he was too scared to throw the ball 10 yards down the field. Its the Os job to move the ball and pick up yards. Keeping us in the game would have required picking up first downs much less actually scoring.

I agree. The big programs do the same thing. Play conservative and hope for a break going your way. Don't give it away early with turnovers.

You do have to stop being conservative. When you're down 10 and getting dominated, and running out of time, you have to try and make something happen. We saw NO trickery of any kind.

He got scared didnt trust the guys he had out there, and he backed us into a hole with his play calling. You get out of holes by picking up first downs, not by not giving up a turnover.

Well that's about the stupidest ####### thing I've ever heard. Unless his "not conservative" file only includes WR passes and other truck plays.

How many times did we try to even throw it beyond the line of scrimmage in the 2nd half? I think that's what bugged me the most. How can you back anybody off if even your passes are essentially runs?
I'm looking over the play-by-play and the 2nd half is just pathetic (obviously). I know we're backed up deep, but calling that crap "conservative playcalling" is an understatement.
2nd half possessions:
2 passes behind the line and a rush, 3 and out. 2 rushes, complete pass behind LoS for no gain, 3 and out. 2 rushes, incomplete pass, 3 and out. Sack, rush, pass behind LoS, 3 and out. Rush, pass behind line, incomplete pass, 3 and out. Pass behind LoS, sack, incomplete pass, 3 and out. Rush and 2 sacks

Being afraid to play will hurt you, not save you.

It's a game, not war. Run the offense you spent time and effort on. We kept throwing passes for lost yardage, often on 2nd down after positive yards on 1st. Hard to see on the broadcast, but late in the game it looked like we kept running the WRs deep and they were covered, but rather than throw underneath where the coverage had vacated, we swung it to backs who were covered behind the line of scrimmage - and losing yardage. That or a few times we tried force it deep into coverage or get sacked trying. Clear em out and throw underneath for what the D will give you. Use the TEs. A lot of this is on Morris. He killed the defense all 2nd half with quick 3 and outs. A high school DC could have stopped our repetitious predictable play calling in 2nd half. And this after dominating the 1st half in all but score.
