Clemson University Ask SC tax payers for $11 Million

For a Garrison Arena building. Never mind that CU has $645 million in their endowment. Tax payers will also probably get a big bill from Cootville flooding. Then most likely our Insurance bills will go up from Cootville flooding. We already pay some of the highest Insurance rates in the country

While Clemson wants money for the arena I candidly believe the General Assembly is going to have far greater priorities like the costs related to storm damage such as roads and bridges! Furthermore the S.C. Supreme Court has ordered a plan to equally fund education K-12 and this one cost is long overdue. These two circumstances will impact us all for years to come, but they will also force us to act.

For those mentioning Cola. and referring the costs to the state I would suggest you come spend a week giving assistance, having no drinkable water outside of bottled, and having to travel on a somewhat destroyed road system. This storm was as costly as Hugo in 1989 and the low country best get prepared for flooding of historic proportions. Be safe rather than sorry!

positive economic impact on the state of South Carolina, as has been documented in many studies.

Not sure coot u adds anything other than a place to house students who were not accepted at Clemson.

From the article:

"The venue is self-sufficient now and the $11 million request would be for one-time funds, Askew said.

"The venue would be capable of attracting large-scale events and Askew said he believed it could rapidly recover any costs involved in the renovation."

Still, when you have over 600 MILLION dollars. Why go for

Oct 10, 2015, 3:51 AM

taxpayer dollars? We are a POOR state. Near the bottom in income. I think we are ranked 46. Clemson already gets Tax dollars. Yea non Union may create jobs--low paying jobs. Fact is we are near the bottom in creating Wealth.

I am NOT for Coots getting tax payer dollars either

Oct 10, 2015, 6:56 AM

We need to spend 10s of Billions of dollars on roads and bridges. Now add the storm damage. I-95 has to have all its bridges repaired before it can open. Then there is all those crappy Dams that need to be fixed.

Maybe because using almost 2% of the endowment on a single capital expenditure isn't so wise, particularly when debt is so cheap right now...?
