Complaints about out routes, flare routes and screen passes

Nov 6, 2022, 2:02 PM

are short-sighted.

When you have two run-heavy teams, the defense is going to try to stop the run by jamming the box and covering the middle of the field between the hashes, which reduces effectiveness of the run game.

The way to beat that strategy is not to try to force throws over the middle of the field. The correct strategy is to get the ball on the edge in the hands of playmakers with screens, flares and out routes. A steady diet of that will cause the OLBs and secondary to spread out laterally to protect against chunk plays - and that then opems up the middle of the field for the plays you want to see.... slants and seam routes. But.....

In order for the screens, flares and out-routes to work, it requires good blocking from the WRs - which we don't have, so we don't advance the ball enough on those plays to make the defense respect the threat - leaving us with the defense continuing to take away the run game.

I predicted before the game that we would win because we had the advantage in OL and DL, but I forgot about the "want to" factor - which we didn't have at all - and that seems to be a coaching issue to me.

As someone who never played football I appreciate your analysis. I would also like to see Clemson run the ball with 7 down blockers and the QB under center... tired of handing off the ball 5 yards deep with 3 wr's spread out and hardly blocking.

They work better when people block and don't hold....

The play call was ok... execution not so much...

When we started using the middle of the field things started working better....

TD’d for rational analysis.

TNet is for hysterics only. I didn’t actually TD you.

Someone sure did.... probably one of the complainers about screens and out routes... :)

I wonder why we haven't used the speed option and jet sweep. Those can spread the D also.

Dabo's certainly got some work to do.

Sorry but that falls under the Tony Elliott school of take what the defense gives you. We should be able to dictate to a defense what we will do, not what they let us do. It’s a soft approach to let them own half the field and only give you the edges to try and cobble together a drive here and there. Plus we can’t execute on the edges.

Good Grief ColumbiaTiger66..you thought our lines would beat

their OL & DL?!?!

Well, that premise and/or wish was erroneous right out of the box..particularly concerning our marsh mellow Oline.

Bill, I did think our O-line would have some success against ND's smaller (273lb) DT, but he reminded me that size isn't everything....:). They just had more fight in them than we did.

I think our guys (and coaches) have been eating rat poison all season (maybe 2 years) and it finally caught up to them.

Well, find yourself a team to coach against a good run defense and don't call any plays on the edge and see how you do. I doubt you would be successful.

But your last sentence is as right as rain:

"Plus we can’t execute on the edges."

The wind was huge factor, Ohio state QB Stroud was awful all day with the wind. I think DJ was trying to adjust his passes to combat the wind but instead of letting his rocket launcher cut thru it he held the ball overthinking it.

Like Dabo said the has to get rid of the ball and not take sacks or throw the ball to a receiver. I wanted to take him behind the shed for an old fashioned talking to about not holding the the hot potato ?!

DJ’s issue is between his ears instead of just playing like he knows how to play. He needs to load up on energy drinks before the game.

Windy day yes! We saw the tailgaters had taken the canopies off their tents like you have to do on the beach sometimes.

Because we have a WR coach who should be a youth pastor instead.

Bring back Jeff Scott.

I don't understand all of this love for Jeff Scott. Sure, the Tigers had great success during the time he was here but in retrospect I believe much of that was due to player talent. The won-loss record at USF has to speak to Scott's capabilities. I know he was the head coach but he surely impacted the play calling just as many on this board claim that Dabo is calling the shots rather than Streeter (or overriding the play calls from Streeter). I think Clemson needs a fresh start with the offense by going outside the organization. There are many college football offenses out there putting up points. Many were shocked when Dabo took Morris from Tulsa. I suspect he's capable of pulling another rabbit out of the hat before next year...

I don't think there was any doubt that ND had the better offensive line, even before the game. Tiger OL has been problematic all season with inability to open holes, protect the QB and penalties...

Some plays on the edge are ok, gotta have some. But not all of them. And it's poor coaching if we keep calling edge plays that depend on WRs blocking if we our WRs can't block.

I'm pretty sure we tried that a million times and it didn't work.
