Controversial Ari Watford take...

Watched Ari Watfords film. Hear me out. I'm glad we got him, because he's a good player. I have to be honest and say I'm not sure how he's the number 1 edge rusher though. He's tall, lanky (in a good way), and has a very good nose for the football and how plays develop. Also understands technique pretty well. The one thing I keep noticing though is he isn't fast twitch at all. I know, I know. He gets to the QB, makes tackles, etc. I see that too, which is why I'm ultimately happy we got him. I'm just a little concerned at the next level he won't be twitchy enough to win those battles. I hate to compare him to lazy @$$ Clowney, but he looks similar to me but less get off. There was one play he did make it to the QB but the very average tackle actually blocked him way to easy. A guy that's 220 should be running circles around HS tackles. I know every DE we've had come through here hasn't been Vic Beasley, but I read the article and when I clicked on it I was excited for the #1 rusher, thinking he'd look unstoppable, like P Woods. Instead, I saw a guy with length that's a good player at that level and that's about it. Someone sell me on him. I'm totally open to being wrong. Have been before.

How about this - if coach Rumph likes him I like him. He’s seen plenty of GREAT DEs. He wouldn’t offer if he didn’t think he was good enough.

I think I'll just let the coaches think about all of that stuff. I don't give it a second thought.

Lets say your concern is the absolute truth. I just hope what Watford lacks in twitch....he makes up for it in space and ground coverage as well as superb vice grip tackling ability.
Another thing to worry about is if he is a one and done player.

Well, not concerned with being one and done. Dabo will pony up to keep players. Especially since we have no idea what the landscape will be in 2026.
As for the original post, while nice to see a DE run around a hs tackle, it's more important to me (in today's game) is space/ground coverage, setting the edge and actually making the tackle. His film, and I know we only get the highlights, he appears to come off blocks well. Jmho.
We offered him early. He does have a senior year. I will agree he needs some good weight. As for being 1,2 or 3 rated. That's kinda splitting hairs.

He's not ranked the #1 DE in the country. His 247 composite rankings are #1 player in Virginia, #4 DE in the 2025 class, and the #30 overall player regardless of position. The headline about his commitment made me think he was the #1 DE in the country as well.

On3 has him as the #1 DE but I think the composite rankings are more accurate. Anyway, if Dabo and Rumph want him, he should absolutely be good to go!

On3 had him #1 because the Coots were in the mix. Now he's a Tiger, On3 will go back in line with the others. Glad he's a Tiger.

Korey Foreman looked like he had a fast twitch. We all saw how that worked out! Doubt any of our coaches would read any scouting reports the TNET faithful would send!

Sp to be clear you're saying you want slow twitch DEs because one example years ago of a quick twitch guy not working out at another school?

Totally reminds me of Ricky Sapp . I love getting the speed on the edge. His availability as a show rush_drop back pass wrecker is also intriguing.

Body wise. Tall, lanky. Thats all. Clooney was same body type but before he was lazy when he was good, he was clearly more quick twitch.

Listen I know Clowny is a coot but stop with the LAZY stuff. Dude was absolutely dominate during his time at SC. Did he quiet on his team in 2013? Yeah he did. He was looking towards the NFL but if we get any DE with something close the Clowny’s ability, sign me up.

When did I say fire them and make me head recruiter? Some of yall get so butthurt so fast it's hilarious. Like every kid we've ever signed is amazing and will always work out to be the best, because "Hunter Renfrow was a 3 star" or some junk like that. The thing that drives me nuts about this site is the extreme nature of opinions. I clearly said I'm glad we got him. I also think he's a good player. I simply don't see the quick twitch like you usually do with top 5 DEs. Quit acting like I said he sucks.
And also, this stupid idea that coaches can never miss or be wrong is also stupid. They are, oftentimes, and have been plenty. The reason we know Hunter Renfrows name is because he was the exception, not the rule. We wanted Korey Foreman before he decommitted, except now some of you with revisionist history like to think he sucked. There's zero telling how he would have turned out had he gone here or somewhere else.
Have a little nuance. The whole "coot" and crap arguments like this are equivalent to morons acting like kindergarteners. God forbid I give an honest evaluation of a player and want to discuss it. Sorry I didn't worship at the feet of our coaches and players.

I watched about 10 minutes of film…I see a great player….with a ton of length, which is very deceiving when it comes to judging twitchiness…long limbs make it SEEM as if they are moving less quickly, but he has plenty of twitch and power.

Went back to watch his film and I think there’s plenty of body twitch - he needs to continue to develop in the lower half to add that extra gear. His motor is good and the upper body needs muscle but his hands/arms are quick and active. The Clowney comp feels right in the sense that he’s just flat-out taller than everyone in film

He's alot more of a technician than you are giving him credit for. He keeps the OLinemans hands off him and keeps leverage until he diagnoses the play. None of their DL is penetrating at a high clip I believe that's being coached that way to keep lbs clean. This kid knows how to maintain space, use his hands, diagnosis quickly, and has a nice burst once he finds the ball.

Clelin Ferrell wasn't really twitchy. Kevin Dodd, Austin Bryant weren't twitchy but all 3 were very good DEs at Clemson. I'd call Vic Beasely twitchy, Myles Murphy, maybe Shaq Lawson and Xavier Thomas early in his career.
But I'd probably take the whole list over twitchy Beasley. Beasley was so twitchy he twitched himself out of every play that wasn't a highlight reel. If he wasn't doing something spectacular he wasn't doing anything.
Give me a guy that can read and diagnose quick, hold ground or crash and hold ground, forces the play horizontal and is a sure tackler over a guy who averages .75 sack a game and has 2-3 total tackles a game.
