Cooper River Bridge Race

Cooper River Bridge Race was this past week.

I have raced that many times even when it was much smaller.
Maybe I will get back there next year.
We would work hard in the race then hit the bars until they closed. Charleston was once a safe place to be.
The best part was "after" in the bars and restaurants which were packed with runners. One had friends everywhere. One year hit them with George Sheehan who loved a cold glass of beer.

Good racers would show with there "A" game. It is a difficult race. It is not hard, but difficult for folks with no patience. I always ran well there as while I have no speed, understood the course which comes down to "last man standing". I knew all the racers my age there and them me.
Every year traveled there with younger guys in my van I could not beat (Robbie Smith, Marty Gass, Dan Hyde, Harry Ash, Ben Hovis). They were OK with my old ### bringing up the rear.

How did my age group do this year?
I competed in over a dozen races this past year in SC and Georgia with my fat ### and won them. The winner here was a guy I remember, but down the list is no one I know. Have the best geezers died or taken up bowling?

I have many Cooper tales.
One year when I was 47, got in at 35:5? and was passed at the line by a kid - Bobby Aswell. He had not noticed me and was trying with all in him to keep one step ahead of old Charlie Rose. I don't think they had a Charlie Rose there this year or a me.

Dr. George Sheehan has always been my coach even when R.I.P.
He wrote books for folks like me.
He teaches things not as to running but as to life. I am a better person due to him.
He loved cold beer and fun.

Once upon a time (late 90's i think) before my knees and hips were replaced with titanium and ceramic parts the spectators started clapping at about the 5 mile mark. Someone around me asked what's that all about and another runner (jogger) replied "oh, Oprah is coming up behind us". Yep, passed by Oprah before the finish. bummer

Avenue was a hell of a section for a long time.

But I don’t follow the data, so I won’t doubt you. Mine insight is on feels.

I went to that race with my wife about 15 years ago. I dropped her off at the start line, and drove to a bar close to the finish line.
She actually beat one of the Kenyans. He passed out on the bridge....
