My mom tested positive yesterday and is not feeling well. She’s not vaccinated, unfortunately. Keep her in your thoughts, please.
Thanks, comrades

Approximately 85% of new infections right now are Omicron variant. Current vaccines have limited activity against that variant anyway, so doubtful the vaccine would have prevented infection, nor limit severity. Good news is the risk looks to be very low for hospitalization or death with this variant.

Preliminary data show current mRNA vaccination with boosters offer 69-70% protection from symptomatic infection within two to four weeks:
https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2021.12.20.21267966v2.full.pdf
And, 85% protection against severe disease and hospitalization:
https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2021.12.14.472719v1Striking Antibody Evasion Manifested by the Omicron Variant of SARS-CoV-2 The Omicron (B.1.1.529) variant of SARS-CoV-2 was only recently detected in southern Africa, but its subsequent spread has been extensive, both regionally and globally[1][1]. It is expected to become dominant in the coming weeks[2][2], probably due to enhanced transmissibility. A striking feature of this variant is the large number of spike mutations[3][3] that pose a threat to the efficacy of current COVID-19 vaccines and antibody therapies[4][4]. This concern is amplified by the findings from our study. We found B.1.1.529 to be markedly resistant to neutralization by serum not only from convalescent patients, but also from individuals vaccinated with one of the four widely used COVID-19 vaccines. Even serum from persons vaccinated and boosted with mRNA-based vaccines exhibited substantially diminished neutralizing activity against B.1.1.529. By evaluating a panel of monoclonal antibodies to all known epitope clusters on the spike protein, we noted that the activity of 18 of the 19 antibodies tested were either abolished or impaired, including ones currently authorized or approved for use in patients. In addition, we also identified four new spike mutations (S371L, N440K, G446S, and Q493R) that confer greater antibody resistance to B.1.1.529. The Omicron variant presents a serious threat to many existing COVID-19 vaccines and therapies, compelling the development of new interventions that anticipate the evolutionary trajectory of SARS-CoV-2.
### Competing Interest Statement
L.L., S.I., M.S.N., J.Y., Y.H., and D.D.H. are inventors on patent applications on some of the antibodies described in this manuscript.

“ ClemTig probably listening to tucker Carlson and a Hollywood podiatrist on fox. ”
YouI get this crap all the time you voice an opinion that does not agree with the Democrat political machine.
I am an Internal Medicine Physician, with an engineering degree from Clemson. I spend an average of 1 hour daily searching and reviewing worldwide data an studies on this virus. Trying to find apolitical information from the US is darn near impossible. The wave of “opinions” masquerading as science from the major “News” outlets crowds your search for data. For the record I do not watch Fox, CNN, MSNBC, or any other US “news” outlet. It’s all garbage. Can YOU make that same statement?

https://www.health.gov.au/news/covid-19-omicron-update-from-cmo-professor-paul-kelly-0
Australia’s chief medical officer direct quote....
“ However, early indications around hospitalisation, ICU admission and death show that Omicron could be far less than Delta and other variants. Importantly, after almost four weeks of Omicron in Australia there are currently no confirmed Omicron cases in ICU and no deaths confirmed to date.”
But, please, line up for your monthly vaccine and exclude the unvaccinated from your holiday plans, as your “news” outlets are instructing you to do. Oh, and be aware the current vaccines carry a risk of myocarditis. That level of risk has been reported at different levels in different countries, but best data I can find suggests 1/5000 risk in males and about 1/2 that risk in females.

yeah, 10 weeks during which you are not dying or getting a tube shoved down your throat in a packed hospital. Look, I understand. I've been holding off on the booster as well, partly because I've wondered if feeling rotten for a couple days is a worthwhile trade-off for those 10 weeks, but I think the answer ultimately is yes, you don't want to be one of those rare breakthrough cases that dies or needs a lung transplant.

“ we found a VE against the Omicron variant of 55.2% (95% confidence interval (CI): 23.5 to 73.7%) and 36.7% (95% CI: -69.9 to 76.4%) for the BNT162b2 and mRNA-1273 vaccines, respectively, in the first month after primary vaccination. However, the VE is significantly lower than that against Delta infection and declines rapidly over just a few months.”
From your own source, the vaccines were showing 55% “Viral efficacy” in the first month and declined rapidly after that. Is that what you call an effective vaccine? Do you plan on taking a monthly booster for a vaccine that shows marginal efficacy? This is just not practical for the world or the individual. The current vaccines were developed against a variant that was here 2 years ago. There have been over 50 mutations in the spike protein over time. The current hotbed, New York, is one of the most highly vaccinated states in the nation. Pfizer is working hard on a new vaccine because the current one is hardly useful. Get your head out of the sand.

Do you understand what efficacy means in this context?
If a vaccine offered 0% efficacy, then it would have no value as you suggest. It means it offers no protection. But these vaccines do offer protection… you’re flatly (and frankly, dangerously) wrong about that.
Efficacy of even 55% is far greater than 0%, and is worthwhile even without protection against severe infection or hospitalization, which are clearly the greatest individual benefits.
But don’t take my word for it. Go ask your primary physician whether the vaccine is recommended for you, and please report back to the group here. I’ll be on pins & needles waiting for the answer.

I am a physician in Internal Medicine. I have recommended the vaccine for all variants prior to this one. I think the initial data suggests the vaccines have limited efficacy against the Omicron variant. You quote one analytical retrospective study. These are typically not strong studies that have inherit weaknesses. But even the study YOU use to bolster your argument shows the current limitations of available vaccines.
There are several reports and investigations that suggest little vaccine activity against Omicron.
https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2021/12/211223151542.htmNew study adds more evidence for omicron immune evasion A new study adds more evidence that the omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, can evade the immune protection conferred by vaccines and natural infection and suggests the need for new vaccines and treatments that anticipate how the virus may soon evolve.
If there is a risk of myocarditis from every jab, and waning benefit, at some point the risk/benefit changes. Especially in light of a variant that isn’t leading to death or ICU stays. Perhaps social isolation for those at risk would be a better plan.
But hey, I’m vaccinated. I’m not an “antivaxer”. I have recommended the vaccines persistently for 2 years. But I will not recommend an intervention that has stopped working. If new studies become available that suggest a benefit, I’m all ears. Looking at all the vaccinated people catching the disease (me included), I doubt that overwhelming evidence for vaccine efficacy against Omicron is coming.

I don’t expect the anti-science crowd to be receptive to that data though.
To them, COVID is just a bad cold or flu, and is just being used to control us, while vaccines are only being pushed for profit motives.
