Crazy Idea

1.The importance and excitement surrounding bowl games has definitely declined with the CFP and will continue to do so with expansion.
2.College football is the only level of the sport that doesn't allow for any pre-season play.

What if they took some of the bowl venues and established pre-season exhibitions? This would allow teams to gauge their talent level and gameplan before the season starts. This would add more revenue for schools and economies where the games take place. This could be a route to drum up interest again in bowls.

As I said, Crazy Idea, but I'd enjoy it.

Maybe it would allow for more accurate preseason ranking too?

Hmmm...

I like it!

Doesn't this already exist with the Charlotte, Atlanta, Dallas and other "kickoff" venues? They aren't truly pre-season b/c they count against the regular season records but this is already happening to some degree.

I'm not sure I'd care about a "pre-season" college game anymore than I care about an NFL one. The only thought I have on current NFL pre-season games is that my squad stays healthy. I barely watch any of them and I'm not paying full boat for a ticket to a game that purposely "doesn't matter".

If they can pack the valley for a spring game I bet they could for a preseason matchup. I also think we'd see some great matchups with the loss not meaning anything toward the regular season. Some of these schools that run from a non-conference challenge might participate.

The week zero thing is sort of 'pre-season' but only for everyone not playing. It really just starts the season a week early for a few teams.

I definitely would understand not wanting to pay for a full game that doesn't matter, but many coaches, including Dabo, have spoken on how College doesn't get a pre-season and I think we could resolve it this way. I went to the spring game and loved it. I'd love it even more if we playing another team during spring/summer. I imagine the prices would be highly discounted, much like the NFL, but would still be a new revenue stream, especially when you factor in concessions and merchandise, not to mention the hotels and restaurant revenue for the local economies.
