Curious about Jadar Johnson's pro prospects/ 40 time

Oct 13, 2016, 4:52 PM

I'm very curious about how the scouts view him. He's got good size at 6'1 217 lbs. However, he's one of those athletic guys (some big time hops) that's just not that fast (sort like DW4). He was a 4.7/40 guy out of high school. He might be 4.6 guy now, but I doubt it's much better than that based on what I've seen on the field. Despite not being overly fast he shows good range and has always excelled in pass coverage. The knock on him for most of his career was that he wasn't a real physical guy and wasn't really a fan of "sticking his nose in there". However, I've seen none of that this year. He came into Clemson at about 180 lbs so his new physical stature may have given him more confidence in this regard.

Because he's not a burner, I don't see him flying up draft boards come April, but someone likely gets a steal in the later rounds if they select him.

The way he plays, I would have never guessed he was a 4.6/4.7 guy.

Robert Smith is a good comp. Johnson may be a slightly better athlete, but will likely be a late round/UDFA guy

johnson is a legit pro prospect. his ball skills and explosiveness separate him. he also has good size and I am going to go out on a limb and assume he improved from his HS 40 time.
