Dabo and the big money donors

14

Nov 3, 2023, 2:52 PM

The boisterous crowd expressing dissatisfaction with Dabo would have us believe they’re the rational ones and speak for a group much larger than the 1.5%. They also have been insisting that the rest of us have buried our heads in the sand as the team has been on a stark, multi-year decline. Some have even tried to pinpoint playing but losing in the CFP championship in 2019 as part of our decline and only making the semifinal in 2020 as being no longer elite (an actual TNet post).

I’ve seen it posted that we’ll see dramatic changes in IPTAY giving. Now, I don’t doubt that giving for FY 2023-24 will be down from 2022-23. Unfortunately for Dabo’s haters 2022-23 shattered the all time record for IPTAY. Pretty shocking since this was supposed to be the crowd that was most attentively watching a multi year decline in process. But it wasn’t just a record number. The previous high water mark was 2020-21 with $76.3 million raised. 2022-23 raised $144.5 million. And while it was boosted by an insane amount of major contributions ($83.6 million) even annual giving hit an all-time high ($41.8 versus $40.7).

No amount of bitching and moaning on the internet is going to move the needle on parting ways with Dabo. In fact, it might embolden the biggest, hardcore boosters to double down their support if they have the slightest perception that these complaints are getting any traction. So maybe you should just support the team you claim to care about.

The only thing I see killing IPTAY donations is the economy. I've noticed the bars and restaurant crowds thinning out the past couple of months. I've noticed people at work that used to go out 5 days a week for lunch, bringing it from home. I've noticed more complaints on social media from friends with financial stability complaining about grocery prices. I could keep listing.

That's my concern right now as long as we're behind the 8-ball with conference payouts.

IPTAY donations will be killed by NIL. Money is now flowing directly to players. Big coach salaries will soon be a thing of the past. Dabo and his fellow coaches will be making NFL head coach money in the 2030s.

Explain 2022-23 being nearly double the biggest year in IPTAY history in that context. And top NFL coaches still make more than college coaches.

Re: Dabo and the big money donors

People haven't fully adapted to NIL. But they will, and when they do, the Trevor Lawrences of the college football world will be making $10 million a year and the Dabo Swinneys of the world will be making $2 million a year.

Which is a correct valuation of their worth, quite frankly.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Wrong. The NIL will get guardrails with such things like salary caps.

Nov 3, 2023, 4:49 PM

The days of these rogue boosters and “collectives” throwing around millions and millions of dollars in the guise of name, image, and likeness are going to be ending in the near future. We have a dedicated building and a better legitimate NIL program than the majority of college football.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Wrong. The NIL will get guardrails with such things like salary caps.

Nov 3, 2023, 4:56 PM

What is a legitimate NIL program as opposed to an non-legitimate one?

But no. I keep seeing you idiots saying the NCAA is going to crack down on NIL payments. They can't. The Supreme Court, with Brett Kavanaugh, issued an opinion basically saying they couldn't. They're not going to risk the ensuing lawsuits.

It will take reorganizing into a super conference and getting anti-trust exemption, like the pro leagues.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Besides Belicheck and Sean Payton

Nov 3, 2023, 5:02 PM

The top 7 NFL coaches all make more than Saban. Lowest makes $3.5 million which would rank in the 50s amongst college coaches. I took his comment to mean NFL coaches make dramatically less which isn’t really true. A top college coach (which Dabo is) makes less than his equivalent NFL coach. But you can be mediocre college coach and stick around for a long time at a ridiculously high wage. Not that the NFL doesn’t love to recycle coaches too.

I wouldn’t be surprised. People should really look at the top 25 highest paid and how little most of them have ever accomplished. Mark Stoops is the 8th highest paid coach, makes $9.0 million dollars, has never won anything, and is career .534. Michigan State was paying Mel Tucker $10.1 million, 5th highest, to go 20-14 before manufacturing a reason to fire him. For which they’ll probably lose a lawsuit. Texas A&M made Jimbo Fischer the highest paid coach of all time for him to go .647 and do nothing. Penn State makes James Franklin the 11th highest paid and in 10 years he is .697 and hasn’t done crap. Dabo is .786 with 10 division titles, 8 conference titles, 6 CFPS, 4 Finals, 2 National Championships. It is insane that these facts need to trumpeted.

If you thought that 5 minute tirade was directed towards one troll, I don't know what to tell you. Dabo has many more datapoints, some of which you pointed out in the OP, to suggest the majority of the fanbase is very appreciative.

I would expect a man in his position to be able to handle an obvious troll a little better than that. Just doesn't make any sense.

Re: Dabo and the big money donors

Nov 3, 2023, 3:45 PM [ in reply to Re: Dabo and the big money donors ]

Well he’d previously thrown out 1.5% and while I don’t think the call was planned or scripted, I think it’s obviously been something he’d already thought about. But “expectations exceeding appreciation” can still be referring to that 1.5%. If you claim to support Clemson, you should be able to rally behind the team for a bad year. Not do everything possible to poison the well. There are folks on Twitter actively encouraging our top recruits to decommitt and they are either trolls that have spent years carefully curating a Clemson persona with years of posts for this moment or they are actual Clemson fans that have lost their minds.

Re: Dabo and the big money donors

Nov 3, 2023, 3:54 PM

That literally exists for every program in America. He could win 10 NCs in a row, and that would still exist. Something ain't right if he's that worried over what he considers 1.5%. Or, he's just incredibly weak...which I don't think is the answer.

Re: Dabo and the big money donor

Nov 3, 2023, 3:49 PM

I’d say the redundant character assasination passing as coaching criticism on here. But I’m also alarmed at the amount of social media, particularly, being directed at our recruits criticizing Dabo and relevant position coaches. And while there are plenty of very obvious trolls there are many accounts that, if they aren’t actual Clemson fans, representing a disturbing amount of time and energy invested to make this heel turn.

Re: Dabo and the big money donors

It would be IDIOTIC to part ways with Dabo. Until he doesn't want be here that makes zero sense.

As frustrating as it has been to watch Clemson getting whipped by teams we out-recruit, and coaching staffs we out-spend...Dabo ain't going anywhere. Yes, the coaching staff is bad. Yes, the talent development at certain positions is surprisingly awful. But, that can be addressed. Dabo is a proven leader and winner.

Dabo broke it, and now he is going to fix it. He's done it before and he'll do it again. I'd rather have Dabo do it, than take a chance on someone else anyways. Besides, who exactly would we replace him with that's better?

My gut tells me that your analysis probably isn't far off the mark. The BOT is sticking with him with the hope/expectation that Dabo will get things turned around. He's not a fluke...and the only reason to doubt him would be if he didn't want to coach here anymore, and that doesn't seem to be the case.

A bunch of 20 something year old TNET posters or anonymous internet handles doesn't exactly shake my confidence. The people making the most noise are likely too busy wrecking the world to know what good judgment is anyways, so why should we care?

Go Tigers!
