Dabo seemed to get visibly upset with the defense

Jan 1, 2022, 9:29 PM

on the sidelines a lot this year but not so much with the offense. Yet clearly the offense was the weakness of our team. I never really understood why.

I think that Dabo is heavily involved in the offensive play calling but left the defense to Venables.

Streeter spoke to the media after the bowl game and said, "Coach Swinney made that call" speaking about a good play the offense made.

I am guessing that most head coaches are more involved in the play calling to one side or the other (offense or defense). For example, Saban seems to be more of a defensive mind. I can imagine he would be more apt to leave the OC alone and heavily influence the defensive play calling.

I hope our offense gets back on track next year. Watching the Rose Bowl I saw two teams that had it together on offense. Ohio State lost its two best WRs and still crushed it in the passing game. Utah brought in its walk-on QB with no passes this year and threw for a TD and made several other good plays.

Both offenses were really good.

Tiger's good d would beat most of those teams

with a better offense, we would be back in play-offs next year.

They know who is too fragile to take criticism. The D can take it.

Saban is ALL defense. Offense is on the OC's shoulders.

Dabo probably didn't make an outside hire because he knew they would pushback hard about having their plays overruled.

Streeter likely won't say anything if his play gets changed.

I don't know. Jeff Scott called the DW to HR TD

Jan 1, 2022, 9:40 PM

when Dabo wanted a different play.

Head coach Dabo Swinney: “The last call, Jeff (Scott, co-offensive coordinator) was adamant about it. We got man coverage, like we needed to get right there. They did a great job setting the route up, and Renfrow popped loose, and DW delivered the ball and it was an unbelievable moment.”

If Jeff had to be adamant about it, that means Dabo wanted something else

Or Tony wanted something else.

We run a “bubble screen” there, get stuffed for a 2-yard loss, clock runs out and we lose 31-28.

Woulda changed the course of history.

There is a reason Dabo's position is also known as Head Coach!!! Take your crap to the dirt #ecker's board!

Since you mentioned it I did see Coach get on BV couple times

Jan 1, 2022, 9:39 PM

which puzzled me..and yes, both Elliott & now Street have mentioned Dabo does call “some O plays” which is his right but goes against what Coots on FGF say..

Dabo is a moron, only a CEO or Rally Cat type guy, not an on-the-field type brain like Spurrier was, yada-yada-yada.

I feel like saying "he calls some plays" is not at all incompatible with the claim that he's no Spurrier play-calling. I do think Dabo is a CEO type recruiter, albeit a quite good one. I have seen little evidence that he's a brilliant offensive mind. There's a reason our offensive style has been so roundly mocked by experts.

How much offensive expertise is needed to call a bubble screen or a run up the middle regardless of down and distance?

Sorry, but on here we blindly trust Dabo and

His friends that even though they said they weren’t changing anything that the offense will magically improve leaps and bounds.

And if the offense is terrible next year, which, why wouldn’t it be… we’ll just hang all the blame on one player who doesn’t live up to they hype and tell ourselves Dabo will fix it without changing coaches or using the portal.

Re: Dabo got upset with "D" ... but not with "O": Reason(?)

Jan 1, 2022, 9:43 PM

Others on this board have suggested that Dabo was tough on the defense because he knew that this unit was great, and that our defense was a confident bunch. Dabo then treated them strictly to push them to perform to their very best.

As for our offense, it was clear that many players did not perform well. Much of this poor performance was simply that some of the young players didn't yet know what to do early in the season.

(1) True FR Marcus Tate at OG ... too many false starts and kept running into other O-Linemen)
(2) True FR WRs D.Collins and B.Collins ... too many drops and no blocking.
(3) Inexperienced QB DJU having the yips (over-throws / under-throws); QB DJU not having the experience to (a) look off his primary receiver, (b) take a snap from under Center, (c) understanding about when to run vs. when to pass on RPO plays; and QB DJU then suffering further confidence problem when (*) O-Line collapsed around him and (**) WR's dropped passes when they were thrown correctly.

The speculation is that Dabo sensed that 'getting tough' with the offense would ruin their psyche. Therefore, he 'babied' the offense this year to ease them into playing better, rather than berating them for playing poorly.

That’s an interesting take

Jan 1, 2022, 9:52 PM

I figured he was hard on the defense because they were so good and were capable of improving. I figured he was soft on the offense because he knew they were hot garbage without any redeeming qualities other than RB (and he was really hard on them) and was planning wholesale changes to staff and would use the portal to grab interior OL, WRs and maybe a senior qb.

I was wrong.

Re: Dabo seemed to get visibly upset with the defense

Jan 2, 2022, 12:59 AM

With bad offensive play, injuries on both sides of the ball, and razor thin depth, Dabo knew the only way the Tigers were going to win was by defense. Dabo felt and put a lot of pressure on BV and the defense. When things went wrong, he lost it a few times. Believe it or not, Dabo is human.
