Dabo talks about his "fishing" strategy

The trend due to the free movement of the TP is to now devalue the high school players. That’s the quick fix of the “Bobby Petrino” coaches. Dabo’s ahead of the curve here because high school coaches are critical to getting support for a player. These staffs that are moving on from high school recruiting are screwing themselves towards developing a stable long term healthy program. The TP has it’s place, but developing high school talent and retaining them is still the best way to sustain a program. High school coaches roll out the red carpet for Clemson because Dabo is doing recruiting the right way.

How does it devalue HS players? I have heard this numerous times but my small brain cant make the math work. The issue is the total number of available scholarships in any given recruiting cycle is a known number. This assumes schools want to fill all available scholarship spots on their team which seems like a reasonable assumption. If a player transfers it reduces the number of scholarships at the destination (receiving) school by one scholarship but opens one additional scholarship at the school the player transferred from (sending school).

Using round numbers for discussion, if there are 10K scholarships for HS athletes available for a given year and 1K players transfer, it opens up 1K scholarships at the sending schools so there are still 10K available scholarships for HS athletes.

What am i missing?

Transfer timing is one thing. Transfers can occur when replacement with an incoming high school player is no longer possible. The program losing a player may have no choice but to backfill with another transfer player. Secondly, when P5 programs trend towards a transfer portal roster the available scholarships can often fall to G5 programs, so you may see many 3 star type players not getting an opportunity to be offered by the top 30-40 programs. That’s a shame, but as I point out Dabo and staff can take advantage of this trend towards quick fix rosters. What I’m describing has been commented on by Dabo and written about by those covering the sport.

Often the sending school will fill the open spot created when a player transfers with another transfer player but regardless of this chain of events there are still the same number of open scholarships for HS players in a given class as every single time a player transfers to fill a spot it opens a scholarship at the sending school. So a HS player may not get to attend his school of choice but there would be a spot at another school for him.

You may have missed the point.

"If we do a good job of loving our players, serving our players, making sure they have a good experience, ... they're going to stay."
