Read that yesterday. The subtitle is hilarious: “let’s do crimes.” Maybe this guy needs to run his NIL program:

Probably old enough to coach now!

Seems to me he just said out loud what we all know to be true. NIL will be used in recruiting and if you want to keep up the Boosters will have to step up with good paying advertisements or whatever to get these kids to stick around.

He said exactly what all of us fans on the message boards have been saying about nil and he openly was saying y’all (boosters) need to pay up for my players.
If it’s true that he knows specifics about other schools coming after some of his players then I’m actually surprised that the players went to their coach and told him, unless it was to negotiate an offer from him, too.

His wording may not have been PC, but he is speaking the truth.
Once upon a time coaches would meet with boosters and tell them, "It's gonna take 10,000 bucks and a new car to sign this player" and a booster would stand up and say, "I've got that." It was sorta like an auction where boosters would "buy" a player. And, it was against NCAA rules.
Now, it isn't. If a football coach (or his intermediary) tells a booster, "It's gonna take 50,000 bucks in an NIL agreement for him to come" and the booster says, "No problem. I can handle that" then the NCAA will not even try to say that is illegal. They have already essentially said it is up to the conferences and schools to police NIL agreements, they are out of it.
Booster club presidents, and those who raise megabucks from boosters will now be asking those mega-donors, "How much are you going to give to the booster club and how much are you going to give for NIL?"

Well. Isn't this just peachy. Old Gary says they gotta cheat in order to survive. Beautiful.

How do you cheat when there are no longer any rules which is what NIL is. Phil Knight could give each Oregon signee a million for doing an ad or two. What is to stop him.

That's what happens when judges, politicians, and the courts stick their unwanted noses into college sports where it doesn't belong. They force unethical BS to arise only so the little guys can survive, and when the bigger schools see them getting away with unethical ways to survive, they will take it even further until all of college sports gets completely out of hand, and they all end up in front of a judiciary committee explaining why they done what ever they had to do just to survive in the world of college sports!!!!

How is that cheating?
" The NCAA rules only prohibit a school or its employees from paying an athlete directly for his or her NIL rights. Some states have laws in place that say athletic departments and their employees may not "cause compensation to be directed" to athletes, but the specifics of what is and is not allowed remain murky."
https://www.espn.com/college-sports/story/_/id/31086019/everything-need-know-ncaa-nil-debate
It's open season on buying college athletes. We all knew this was going to be the result of NIL. Patterson just told the truth about where this is headed if not already there. And I think we are there.
The sport would have been better off if all colleges were allowed to pay athletes a salary with a minimum and maximum range for the athletes. Under NIL there is no minimum or maximum. It's a bidding war. The NCAA dug this hole we are in by resisting paying athletes.

There's Going To Have To Be Some Type of Regulation
Oct 7, 2021, 1:48 PM

I don't like the word regulation or oversight but I don't see how to level the playing field.
There was a time when a school could sign as many players as possible and the rosters were maxed at 85 scholarships to level things.
I have no idea what regulating NIL would look like but something will have to happen because only a small handful of programs has unlimited funds to sign Players to NIL deals.
