Did fans start the “opt out” trend?

Dec 17, 2022, 1:09 PM

Now that there are over 40 (you read that right) bowl games is it any wonder the players put less stock in them? Fans have.

Average bowl attendance has dropped every single year from 54,844 in 2007 to 40,935 in 2019 ( per statist.com https://www.statista.com/statistics/254642/average-attendance-at-division-i-fbs-college-football-bowl-games/
). At that rate every senior on the team would have to opt out to keep up with the rate the fans are opting out. Those stats are further propped up by the new year six and playoff bowls. Turn on the Fenway bowl and tell me those teams are being supported.

I don't think so.

Agents have started the "opt-out trend"!

You are correct about bowl attendance. Although; it's skewed some in my opinion. Why? Because of situations like: The Bahama Bowl. The stadium only holds 15K and everybody won't be able to make a Friday in the Bahamas. So, when you throw the 5k who made the game "it looks bad"!

Other Bowl games are played on weekdays and most people even during the holiday season, have to work! Perhaps, to our point, a product of so many Bowl games.

Bowl games in my mind that are not the playoffs are all about "NEXT SEASON"! It far less of a cap to the season and more a tool to preview your team the next season.

For that reason, I find them intriguing. A senior-laden team in bowl season tells a story as well! That story is; you all will be rebuilding next year!

They have value; though I believe there are too many! To me it shouldn't be 6 fbs wins and you are in. It should be 7 or more.

It will take care of itself

College football has become "All About The Money"!

If the companies who host these games stop seeing value; call it a day and pack it up!

As long as there is profit to be made - you will have these bowl games.

I know even when the game itself isn't a sellout; Charlotte restaurant and hotel businesses always do very well during bowl season and ACCCG weekend.

Some fans see it as a waste, but clearly, there is interest. As long as there is interest; you will have these games.

So do you agree?

Dec 17, 2022, 1:40 PM

That bowl season is now an exhibition cash grab and not part of the season?

100% agree with you.

My thing however is, "it's beneficial to the football team in a bowl game as prep time for next season"! Why? Because it is illegal to conduct practice "unless you are preparing for a bowl game"!

Which is why coaches want to make a bowl game so badly. That extra practice time you get is invaluable for players your team will be relying on the next season!

Gotcha.

Dec 17, 2022, 1:52 PM

Not sure your opinion on opt outs but what you just said is the main reason I’m OK with opt outs; it provides your future starters with more practice and reps.

That's exactly what the bowls used to be for the first 50 or 60 years of their existence.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The bowl proliferation is primarily due to...

Dec 20, 2022, 9:51 AM [ in reply to Re: Did fans start the “opt out” trend? ]

....ESPN realizing they can make money off of them. The minor bowls don't need butts in seats. They have a TV contract. And, ESPN wouldn't pay the bowls the money for the TV rights if ESPN didn't make money off of the telecasts.

1. ESPN pays the bowls.
2. ESPN sells advertising for the bowls.
3. Customers subscribe to cable networks who pay ESPN.
4. Customers buy the products advertised on the game.

Bowls make money.
Schools make money.
ESPN makes money.
And, the customers willingly pay the bills for the pleasure of watching the games.

Seems like everybody wins.

Minor Bowls lost attendance well B4 Opt Outs.

Dec 20, 2022, 12:34 PM

When the BCS started the bowl games started taking hits as far as attendance. When the playoffs started it got worse. All before players opting out was so prolific.

As BFSU said, "somebody is making money off it or you wouldn't have a new one pop up seemingly annually"!

As a football fan, "I don't care if it's XFL or replay of college or NFL, I'll end up watching it sometimes"! A bowl game that's live; despite opt-outs and despite it not being for a National title - "is still football"!

Look at how people attend and watch Spring games! Why? Because it's football! Certainly, everybody doesn't grasp the importance of it; but those of us "who get it" understand it's building for what we hope will be a dominant season "NEXT YEAR"!

Has nothing to do with fans and everything to do with the woke crowd which only focuses on one’s self

Christian McCaffrey started it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Correct

Dec 17, 2022, 1:56 PM

But this a chicken or egg thing. Fans (by show of attendance) have been saying for the past 15 years that bowls don’t mean as much to them, so it makes sense that the players would follow suit.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

They add bowls and average attendance goes lower?

Dec 17, 2022, 1:57 PM

Isn’t that to be expected? Shouldn’t you give the figure for total fan attendance per year, if you are serious about making an argument?

Comparing total numbers now and 20 years ago; 40 years ago?

Sorry, nothing found on quick search.

Valid questions and I apologize I didn’t dig up the stats with a quick poke around the webs. I’m sure it’s there and would also be interested to see those numbers.

Still, I feel average bowl attendance still shows how fans feel about bowls given the likelihood of a person to attend a bowl other than the one their team is playing in is low.

I can't believe that the Bahama Bowl featuring UAB and Miami (OH) would hurt average attendance.

When the TV money becomes greater than the attendance money, then you have bowls made for TV.

Wait until we get a 12 team playoff and watch bowl attendance plummet even further.

I think the numbers are also misleading too. More bowl games now a lots of them small stadiums. Big games bigger stadiums but still lots small stadiums middle of week games. If they needed bigger numbers for smaller bowls put the games in Death Valley Deaf Valley Sanford Vols stadium as long as home team not playing alway game. Students and fans would fill the stadium cause those schools love football. At decent price those stadiums full and big revenue.

Re: Did fans start the “opt out” trend?

One of the things that happened: having bowl games in professional sports towns like N.Y.C(Yankee stadium), Boston(Fenway Stadium), San Diego(use to pro-sports town), and Los Angeles(they don't half support their own college teams let alone outside teams).

The idea of having them on campus is interesting! Perhaps that would bring the cost down; which don't fool yourself: is a huge part of why people do not attend. People are already spending money on holiday shopping(Christmas to me; but not to offend anyone). So, most people if they don't have to kick out money for that plus bowl travel, tickets, and accommodation fees, just will stay home.

Plus, it use to be, things were shut down during the holidays. Some of you are old enough to remember that. Remember you had to wait for Thanksgiving to be over to go shopping the next morning at normal business hours. Same thing for most companies curing Christmas and New Years!

Business saw the money it supposedly missed out on years ago and decided to start opening up. This business did it. Then that one. This means; "people have to work"!

And of course, ease of access. Even if your team is going to some bowl game in Shreveport, LA in the middle of the week: "it's on TV"!
If you were a die hard and wanted to not miss your schools bowl game, had the money and time off to travel mid week, you use to make those games.
Now, unless you are just going for something to do and so happen to be off, you likely stay home and watch it at home. No bathroom lines. To over-priced tickets. No missed flights. No hassle. Easy!
People want easy and hassle free as much as possible now!

Well if you add crappy bowls for crappy teams, doesn't that

Maybe the fans not showing up is because of their star players opting out. Chicken or the egg?
