The young man can play. He reminds me of Hunter Renfrow... great routes, gets separation on breaks, deceptive speed. Congrats to Eli!

He got a PWO offer

That wasn’t even a thing until a few years ago when someone decided to church up the term walk-on. Just means they told him he could come walk on if he wanted.
That has more to do with who you know than how good you are. And I’m sure Venables is very familiar with him.

He will have a scholarship before second year. Led Daniel receptions three years. Decent grades and scores. Great home situation.

I don't know that that is really true. I think PWO is assigned to guys for whom there wasn't room for a scholarship but the coaching staff knows they can play and makes it clear they are first in line if/when scholarships open up.
Typical walk-ons are the guys who have no expectation for ever earning a scholarship but love the game and are pretty much happy being on the practice squads.
The more "who you know" guys are the coaches sons, favors, etc. Some are probably pretty good, some not. But those guys should never get scholarships (unless they turn into really good players - and even then, these high paid coaches can afford in-state tuition for their kids!).

Oh, I get it now. The PWO is first in line to get an available scholarship. Well, no, actually second in line behind the Greyshirts. Unless you decide to fill that Scholly with a Portal Transfer. Yes, I have clearly determined that a PWO is in a line although the length of the line may vary.

Not sure you fully understand what a PWO really is.***

Exactly. PWO is a level above simple walk-on. PWOs are

scholarship guys in waiting.
They are usually the talented, undersized, slightly slower guys who had offers from smaller schools.
These are the “Renfrow’s” of the world.
Simple walk-one’s are guys like “Rudy” who come out and know they’ll probably never play much if at all.

Eli Merck can play! He broke Nuk’s receiving

Records at Daniel High. And every other receiver before Nuk. He is the All-time leading receiver at Daniel High. He is deceptively fast, He can high point the ball, great hands. In my opinion I would’ve offered him over Mysun unless they plan to make Mysun a DB. Clemson should get Eli on PWO instead of letting him go to Oklahoma.

What do you not get about the fact that EVERY program

In America needs talented PWO’s that are willing to get their brains beat in while running each opponents offense every week. Some of these are doing this knowing they may never see the field and perhaps all they get is an experience that allows them to be a coach some day or maybe play when they are a senior. Basically Dabo Swinney’s story there.

I understand that point.
I'm just confused how that helps OP's point. BV saw that this guy is willing to get his brains beat in? That's why he offered him a PWO?

Likely roster management comes into play

They see a guy who could contribute in 2-3 years. They have a plenty of receivers. They need more linemen or DB's.

They'll likely sign a few highly rated WRs and transfers in 2-3 years though

BV is a smart man...he is now in our state recruiting if Eli heads to Oklahoma. Eli doesn't want to follow the PWO route to Clemson (like many others)....just because he can if he chooses.....he wants to branch out and make it on his own convictions.
