ESPN payout to ACC

Mar 21, 2016, 11:43 AM

Listening to Roy this morning....if the ACC doesn't have a dedicated ACC Network by July 1, ESPN will supposedly be giving $45M to the ACC....guess they underestimated Swofford's ability to get anything done

So he'll give himself a raise

Mar 21, 2016, 11:54 AM

and the member schools will get like an extra $2 million each. Not that big of a windfall really, especially if it's just a 1-time payment.

EDIT: i think i read this wrong. So is this saying

Mar 21, 2016, 12:00 PM

that ESPN will basically be fined $45 mil if its not ready by this date?

Best Is The Standard

$45 million is pretty weak.

Mar 21, 2016, 12:05 PM

ESPN could just pay that every few years and I suppose some people would think Swofford was really "giving them the business" LOL.

Hulk Hogan is about to get around $400 million from Gawker (a blog 'news' site) for showing about 3 minutes of his hilarious sex tape... just to put that "whopping" $45 million in perspective.

45 mil for each year that the ACC network

Mar 21, 2016, 12:11 PM

after this July is not chump change. Also you inflated Hulk's $115 mil victory quite a lot to make your point

Confirmed here an annual penalty of 45 million. Not too bad as the ACC gets paid while still developing plans for the future.

45 million divided by 14 schools = not enough to pay one

coaches salary for one year these days.

that's not enough money to cover the bonuses the coaches will receive. Granted, it's free money but it's not a lot of free money.

if Swoffie were smart (I am trying not to laugh),

Mar 21, 2016, 2:31 PM

he would ride out the ESPN fines like the article suggests and start looking at a deal with Netflix or Hulu. Be the first to that and reap the benefits.

I am telling you that we are within 5-7 years of a major sport landing a contract on Netflix or Hulu. I have a friend that works for ESPNU here in Charlotte and he has made the comment a few times that one of the major sports (NBA, NFL and MLB) are already in discussions with a Netfix or Hulu.

I would like to think Swoffie is smart enough to see how things are changing and is working towards something like that.

I bet Amazon gets in ahead of Netflix and Hulu***

Uhhh...no he's not....

Mar 21, 2016, 5:13 PM [ in reply to if Swoffie were smart (I am trying not to laugh), ]

Swofford is no visionary.

This is the same buffoon who effectively gave away millions of dollars in conference TV revenue to RayCom (largely because one of his old UNC alumni pals owns the network and his son worked for the network), and who brought Boston College to the league (again, while his son was working for the school). What a brilliant move that turned-out to be.
