Ever seen a 1959 Sugar Blues jersey?
Dec 17, 2012, 11:41 AM

We wore them instead of orange to better contrast with LSU's white jersey's on black and white TV. We had a birthday party yesterday for my father who passed away July 4 this year. Snapped this pic of his jersey hanging in his pool room. The name tag is from a bowl reunion they had a while back, and he had Coach Howard autograph his. I have never seen another Sugar Blues jersey and don't imagine many, if any, are still in existence. Several years ago the Orange and White ran the only known color photo of us on the sidelines pregame and darned if old 79 wasn't the first number you noticed. I got them to send me a negative and had a large print made and framed for his birthday one year. When he lost a leg last year after multiple (13) surgeries, he had this one made: http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u175/clemson86/Woody_sitting.jpg A Clemson man 'til the end.

this and the story. I remember in the 70's CU sold off some old Russell jersyes from Howards last years. I got a home and a road one. I've never seen the Blue ones from about 10 years earlier except in pictures. I hope one day the museum planned for the west zone will have lots of interesting things like this

The second time we wore them was my freshman year 1962 against USC. The picture looks faded. They were a bright navy blue with orange sholder stripes. the numbers were actually silver. BTW we won that game on a Rodney Rogers field goal in the 4th quarter. Starting QB was Joe Anderson from Greenwood.

although young and have heard many, many stories about the staff and players on that team.
Different times and a different place, those of us who grew up with that Clemson will never forget it.

I am having a hard time telling for sure, but I believe that he is the 2nd row from back, and 3rd from the left.

Trying to recall if that was the era of two platoon or one platoon ... with only 47 varsity players, some of them would have had to have played on both sides of the ball for sure.

Those jerseys helped spawn the infamous Coot prank during a Big Thursday matchup where rumors had it we were going to wear the Sugar Bowl uniforms for the game then a coot frat using a local HS uniform similar to those came out impersonating the Clemson team. Set off a big brawl with CU students who were not amused, including one of the Mahaffey brothers who was caught on camera beating some coot ####. One of my father's favorite college stories.

My dad tells the story that the plan was to wear Orange jersey's, but at the last minute, the TV guys said that there would not be enough contrast between the white and orange jersey's on the B/W TVs. Howard sent someone to the local sporting goods store and bought the only color they had enough of for the game. (now the story has grown some over the years, as well as how big a role dad played in the game
But they are all great stories!

My second year at Clemson
Dec 17, 2012, 2:30 PM
|
|
I wandered down the hall of my dorm and started chatting with a guy about how he ended up at Clemson. We both realized our fathers had played on the '59 SB team. I asked him his last name. He told me and I said, "Oh your dad..." and before I could say "played tailback" he cut me off and said, "I know, I know. Dropped two touchdown passes." That guy was www.linkedin.com/pub/greg-usry/18/254/389.

I think Paul Snyder snapped a punt snap and hit the up back, and Billy Cannon tossed a HB pass to beat us. May have beat George "Pogo" Ushery (sp). I could be dead wrong as I was crying so hard my memory may have been clouded.

the mighty LSU Tigers even up the entire game to that point. I've got the game on DVD and watched again not long back. I'd forgotten just how conservative we were on offense in those days. Even with QBs like Harvey White and Lowndes Shingler, we very seldom passed the ball in that game.

Frank Howard on the pass - three things can happen and two of them are bad. Always had a big stud fullback that was as big or bigger than the tackles. On short yardage it was fullback right or left and most of the time got it.

watch Houston Oilers play.
Cline and Ray Matthews I think played for Houston. I know Cline did and can't remember for sure if it was Matthews.
Love those AFL games.
Watched Denver one night, they dressed in Brown and Yellow with strips on their socks that ran up and down the leg instead of around them. Not a nice looking uniform.
I still wonder at times about the New York Titans, what were the colors they wore back in those day. I thinnk it was Red and White. I think they were the 1st team I saw dress in one solid color but it was on TV and back then the TV was black and white.

Good stuff. Yep, Doug played in Houston from '60-'67 and then with San Diego for one season before retiring. He was converted from a Fullback to LB after his first season in Houston.

Clemson played the # 1 LSU team led by Billy Cannon. Coach Paul Dietzel had his defense called "The Chinese Bandits." They beat Clemson in the Sugar Bowl 7-0. Clemson's George Ussery came close to scoring but didn't make it. Have you considered donating that Jersey to the CU Athletic Museum?

Roomed next to Derwood on D-6 in the tin cans. Spent many good times in Greenville with him and Pete. So sorry to here of his passing, he was one of a kind. ps. Coach Howard, in a joking manner, call him "Dum-Dum" , he had great fun teasing him.

I do know about dum dum, which I think he probably earned with his first semester of four D's and an F after some older players convinced him he could play poker all night and skip class because he was a football player.

Those jerseys are close to the heart of any Clemson old-timer like me. They are more a part of Clemson football lore and mystique than any of today's youngsters could ever imagine.

I remember the Clemson Boys played #1 LSU to a 7-0 game in 1959 Sugar Bowl..with their feared "Chinese Bandit" specialty team that invented gang tackling (they say), but who wondered who was hitting them back.
We lost a fumble at the goal-line I think..while they scored on a trick half-back run & stop with toss into the End zone by famed A-A Billy Cannon...who later became a dentist..and later to jail for cheating.
LSU knew who #10 Clemson was after that jarring game..and the Tigers came back a year later to play in the 1st Bluebonnet Bowl versus TCU and A-A Bob Lilly..who starred later with Dallas Cowboys for umpteen years.
GoTiGERs..Stand Up & FIGHT Boys...and beat LSU &SEC!

of them
but from reading the writeup it looks like LSU blew several chances to score in the 1st half, even though they got only 1 first down.
seems strange according the write up but it also seems like Clemson was lucky not to be down by several TDs.

They wore them for a home game VS UVA in the 60's for the same reason, better contrast on TV. Loved them and still remember them vividly.
