For anyone on here who keeps up closely with recruiting...

what do you think is the primary reason that we seem to have lost our edge in this area, to a certain extent? We just seem like we have been in a little bit of a slump in closing the deal with our prospects lately.

However I'm really looking forward to it this year. I'm taking my 5-year old son with me for the first time!
I figure he's old enough to help me carry all those boxes of memorabilia I want to get signed. I promised him a revenue share of 2% for what I make on eBay.

basically because we are almost full. if there were numerous spots available there would be more late buzz. there may still be a couple of guys who we will take late or find room for.

Clemson is in a similar situation as USC.
Big recruiting class last year.
This year for both schools it is Quality>Quantity
Clemson is stocked with 4/5 Star Recruits from the last 2 seasons.
Due to this, their class will not have as many open slots as the last few years.
Also, Clemson does not do that thing where they offer scholarships and then pull them when someone better accepts (like some SEC schools do).
The big thing is replacing Tajh. I think you guys have a QB to take over (as does USC), but you never really know what you have until it actually happens.

will be committing to Clemson on national television?
Clemson's current class which is ranked in the top 15 by all recruiting services, has been firmly committed for months.

Scout has us at 30 so not all services have us in the top 15. I agree that this small class hurts but look at Uga they have less committed and they are in the top 10 in most recruiting rankings.

Bc we never know the full story with a kid
Jan 2, 2014, 8:33 AM

Just bc a report comes out saying he liked Clemson doesn't mean the coaches did anything wrong. And the fact that at our two biggest recruiting activities for this season were butt whoopings handed to us doesn't help in closing the big ones. Kids are unpredictable, it's not like we always snag the big name guys, it's very rare for Clemson. Only one school wins on announcement day, Clemson isn't the only one losing out. I'm confident they will build a strong class to finish this cycle out

All of this envy for SEC schools and FSU is starting
Jan 2, 2014, 9:09 AM

to get old. It's almost like some other kind of envy, the P kind.....
Every time another school gets a 5 star player that looked at us, some here get absolutely jealous and almost suicidal at times. We'll never ever compete again!!!
Tell that to Michigan State or UCF or even Duke or SCar. None of those teams land the top of the top but still manage to have effective programs lately.
Once some get the tears out of their weepy eyes about losing a recruit here or there and look at the sum total of the last 4 or 5 classes, you would see steady improvement.
We are getting better talent. We need to keep that trend going AND see maturity from our coaching (44 y.o. head coach and first time collegiate OC). If next year proves we can't continue to play better, I'll start to join the camp of coach-haters. But I don't think it will be a lack of talent that is the source of the problem. Talent development will be.

If you want to care about recruiting and not a recruiting ranking
Jan 2, 2014, 9:33 AM

Look at the kids play football instead of their star rating from a recruiting service. Dabo doesn't chase stats or stars. He goes and finds kids that can play football and he offers them. we offered deshaun first as a sophomore I believe and he was probably unranked. Now he is a 5 star blue chipper and every other school in the country wishes they had beaten Clemson to him.

Our problem is player development
Jan 2, 2014, 10:16 AM

We get plenty of fine recruits we just dont coach them up whi h is one of my bigger probs with swinney. Venables is our best coach at player development...he gets it. Dabo is great at bringing them in but not so much with helping them see full potential. I really wish dabo was our recruiting coordinator, morris head coach, and venables our d coordinator. With that line up we start beating fsu and the coots.

Dabo oversees it all, but he personally isn't supposed

to develop players. He, as opposed to Morris, is properly the head coach. He is not just a good "CEO" like Tommy Bowden was (and he did do some of those things very well), he is also the motivator, the recruiting "heartbeat," the recruiter of the STAFF, the face of the program, etc. He definitely has his finger on the pulse of what our program needs, even if he might make a mistake here and there.
If Venables is good at developing players, we should tip our hat to Dabo for getting him here. I think Morris does a good job of determining the best "mix" of players and demanding the best out of them. He seems to be very good with the QB development, especially, and that seems to be as much a "mental game" development as a physical one. Tajh evidently was on that "edge" of falling off as a younger player, but he changed and met Morris's challengee. I think Dan Brooks is great at DL development. Caldwell obviously comes with great accolades; I think improvement can be made there, though. Other positions such as DB and TE: TE has generally been good with a dropoff this year. I think that is a talent thing more than anything else, with our starting TE getting injured. DBs, well a change was made by Dabo, and we are seeing improvement. I hope that continues.
I think Dabo has shown himself to be willing to look back and measure progress and success--and to make changes where necessary.
With regard to recruiting: I do feel like we have lost some key players that were expected to fall our way (e.g., Marshall, Gurley, Adams, Robinson, and, to maybe a little lesser degree, Featherston). Dabo affects recruiting as the head coach. Perhaps we lost something in recruiting when we lost Cheese (and I think Brad Scott no longer is involved). Perhaps we have been victims of the bagman (and I really do strongly suspect we have in a couple of instances, but NOT with Marshall and Gurley). And perhaps Dabo will assess the success of the individual recruiters and make adjustments. But our current class is nothing to scoff at. My main concern is DL recruiting.
I really would love for Venables and Morris both to settle in for a "ride" with us. I think the constant unsettled nature of their status at the end of each season (mostly Morris) doesn't help our recruiting.
Finally, I do think losing to FSU like we did...and continuing to play tight and poorly against SCAR doesn't help us, either. Undoubtedly, the media spin and the SEC coaches' spin is in full force. If we will beat the SEC teams (and we have done well, just not great, given the SCAR head-scratchers), that will take care of some of the "problems."

Even with clemson going after mcmillian the man catch in my eyes is Andrew Williams. This kid is IMO better than Featherstone and has a college body right now. If Beasley leaves williams provides quality depth at a position we need. I hope dabo goes all out for him and yeargin.

imo our in state recruiting has not been good in the last few years. I don't know if our coaches don't try to get some of the sc kids or just like Georgia and nc kids better. the coots have had more success in state it seems.

I agree. I think some of it is connected to "pipelines."
Jan 2, 2014, 1:18 PM
|
|
And the other part is that, unfortunately, the media has a tremendous effect on "image." If the media keeps telling a lie, it becomes the "truth." It is up to the ACC to start winning better. Clemson needs to beat SCAR, no doubt.
With regard to pipelines, Bamberg has been good to Clemson, but, this year, we didn't get Crosby. Before, we had gotten almost everyone we wanted. Daniel seems to have a strong Clemson lean, as does T.L. Hannah. Other than Rock Hill, the upstate in general has sent us some good players. But it does seem that Rock Hill and other mid and lower-state areas are putting out more of the highly ranked players. I think a good barometer will be whether we land Huggins out of Orangeburg, which is near Bamberg. Orangeburg has sent us a few good ones, too.
