GARRETT RILEY

on the sidelines looks pretty detached from the game. No excitement or emotion. Maybe tv is too focused on Dabo and we never see much of Riley or maybe he just has a laid back personality in which case he could be in the booth. I suspect he is not in the booth because he is not really calling most of the plays. Could be why he is not excited and is somewhat detached.

Also wonder if he is second guessing his decision to come to Clemson now that a CFP is off the table and he probably thought Clemson would be in the CFP with a 5 star highly recruited QB. His stock has certainly gone down so far. He is now stuck here until his stock rises again. If I was Dabo, I'd turn the play calling entirely over to Riley and let him bring in his own staff. I would then hold him accountable for the offense and if he failed, he would be gone along with his staff. That way he would find the best staff available. They would then succeed as a team or fail as a team. Same with the defense.

Baylor will come for Duke Head Coach and former aTm defensive coordinator Mike Elko first.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Duke is going to have a really tough time keeping Elko

I really don't think he can call the game fully. I think dabo has his hands in the offense pretty heavily and won't let him just let loose. Watch him call plays at TCU and SMU and it's apparent he is handcuffed. Forget PPG stats, watch the games.

He didn't have full control at TCU or SMU, either. Very few head coaches turn their teams over completely to anyone. Look at Saban and his interactions with his coordinators. His hands are all over both sides of the ball. This latest Bama OC is in the booth, but the others were standing on the sideline right beside ole Nicky boy and he was all over them the entire game. It's a fact of life.
Head coaches are all over their coordinators and it's always been that way and Riley was under a former OC at TCU and he clearly didn't have full control of the offense. Unlike you fellas, Riley knows this and isn't going to be leaving because of fictitious feelings on some message board.

What the hell are you talking about. He has a laid back personality. Very calm. he called a great game. Was it perfect, NO, but no one is. We were moving the ball on FSU. Cade did an outstanding job. 429 yards of offense.

I agree. I think Dabo will not turn the offense over to Riley fully. I also think that is why he may leave after this year. Dabo's offensive play calling is part of our problem in my opinion. He loves him some WR screen for a 2 yard gain or loss. Happened at a critical time Saturday and may have contributed to our loss.

Would you rather him be yelling and screaming and swearing?

They sure do.

A OC/DC should be given the job of being in charge of the offense/Defense and held accountable for the results. I am sure Riley would be all in on that. Perhaps he thought that was going to be the deal when he came to Clemson. I am not dissing on Riley. I stated that maybe his personality is laid back. I am dissing on Dabo for not giving Riley the opportunity to do his job. Dabo has a legal size paper menu of plays in his hand and tucked in his back. Riley has a post it note in his hand.

I and others are questioning if Riley actually calling the plays or is Dabo calling them. Is Riley now regretting his decision to come to Clemson since he is not as fully engaged as the play caller as he may have thought? Who knows. It is a question. And his stock is going down, not because he is bad but because the team is 2-2 when he probably thought the team would be 4-0 and on the way to a cfp, not out of it after 3 games and not even in the top 25 and most likely not a shot at the ACCCG. You know it has to be a big let down to the hottest OC in college FB last year. If anyone can't see that, you are blind.

I have no doubt that if Riley had been given complete control of the offense and could pick his own staff, he would be outstanding and we would probably be 4-0.

I thought this team would be in the CFP and would win it. I thought after Duke loss we would go 11-1 and win the ACC and still make the CFP. After the last 3 games, I was way off base. I am still holding out for 10-2 but think that may be a stretch. Whatever the final end result is, I hope some coaching changes will be made at end of season. And Dabo may very well make them. Hope so. Hope he does what good leaders do, delegate, don't micro manage and support and trust his staff and hold them accountable for their results.

I’m pretty sure 99% of the OCs in the world are calm and collected so you are way off in most of your post. DCs are different animals, but some of those are calm, too. Venables was crazy on the sidelines, but he also cussed out recruits that rejected him.
Being animated is overrated. I want coaches that can relate to the guys and teach them fundamentals and develop them. Leave the animation for the S and C coaches that spend more time with the players.

Disagree with just about everything you said. Let’s wait for a little bigger body of work here at Clemson before we speculate too much. If you can’t see improvement then we are not watching the same team. But that’s why we have opinions and a place to express them!

I get a real kick out of how many here know who is calling the plays. They have a lot more info than me. Let’s face it, a lot of football plays look a lot alike and nobody come up with plays like we have never seen before.

Seriously. Dabo already called out Wes for his playcalling. So that tells you who is calling the defensive plays. Why would it be different with the offense? People just want something to blame it on.

You ever stop to think maybe it's more challenging at Clemson due to the fact this conference is better defensively than the B12 and compounded by the reality that we don't have a WR that's picked second in the NFL draft in addition to a 4th rounder at his disposal to really make this offense go ?

evaluating his performance.

He is in his first year here, working with new players in what sounds like a new scheme ("Clemson's offense" and not Riley's offense).

We have certainly moved the ball well and been in a position to score more points. At the end of the day, players have to execute. That's partly on Riley, but he is only four games into his tenure here. Other coaches on our staff who have been here longer should shoulder most of the blame for the lack of development and execution at this point.
