If your father bounced before you were born

You never saw him or spoke to him your whole life, but he left you a book to live by, would you consider him a good dad?
CUintulsa®, I think I’m the first to come up with this one.

Ha. Maybe. You might be a few millennia late with that one, but tell you what ... we'll give you credit for the wording, at the least.
No, that would not be a very good dad. Some people reading this have had a dad like that. I know at least one person who has had one. My son. I was that dad. Bad dads, I know about.
But if I was the one who left home, and my dad, rather than allowing the earned consequence to play out ... well, he can tell it better than I can:
“There was a man who had two sons. The younger one said to his father, ‘Father, give me my share of the estate.’ So he divided his property between them. Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild living. After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in that whole country, and he began to be in need. So he went and hired himself out to a citizen of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed pigs. He longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything.
"When he came to his senses, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have food to spare, and here I am starving to death! I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired servants.’ So he got up and went to his father.
"But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him. The son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let’s have a feast and celebrate. For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ So they began to celebrate."
That would be a very good dad, one worth surrendering to.
So, years later when my son was 12 I had to stand in front of him and try to be the bridge between the two, admitting to being the worst of all dads while pointing him to the One dad he could trust. I know bad dads, and the worst one in the mirror. I know the only Good One.

“ I know the only Good One.”
I would have to disagree that the Bible paints the picture of a father, much less a good one.
But this is another thing that annoys me about Christianity. It’s all about how terrible we are and how awesome “He” is.
I mean everyone likes their ### kissed but come on…

Everyone has a right to their own view of self. In my experience, we either recognize the one in the mirror or we philosophize one of our choosing. We all start with the latter, I think.

So you really truly believe that you deserve hell?
I doubt you are that bad. Hitler doesn’t deserve that.

The biblical god orders or directly causes the death of men, women and children. He allows the vast majority of his children to suffer a horrendous eternal fate.
But sure that’s good/loving and im evil for not being convinced by either terrible or the lack of evidence.
It obviously nonsense.

The New Testament god seems to be totally different than the Old Testament god.
In fact I believe one of the early church fathers believed this to be true.

I don't know, both testaments show a god obsessed with blood sacrifice.

“Marcion's teachings departed from traditional Christianity in a number of ways. Most dramatically, perhaps, Marcion rejected the idea that the Old Testament God and the New Testament God were the same being. Up until then, the traditional Church had considered the Old Testament to be sacred and assumed that Christianity was a fulfillment or continuation of Judaism. Marcion's rejection of that idea affected many different doctrines and beliefs.”

Yeah, no, I agree, I was just messing around.
There seems to be a clear difference in demeanor at the very least.

Gotcha but I think it’s interesting that the writings this guy used were possibly earlier than the canonical gospels.

God didn't leave me, I left Him.

When I made the decision to call upon Him, He was exactly where I left Him and waiting for my return. He killed a fatted calf and we had a feast celebrating my return home...and Glory to His Holy name.

This is clearly not literal, so I'm curious what you mean by this.

The Bible speaks of angels rejoicing when a lost man gets saved...'party up in here.
The calf represents the spiritual food, word of God which was opened to me upon my getting saved. Dwelling in the Father's house represents the indwelling of God's Holy Spirit which happens with salvation.
