WR speed

Dec 25, 2022, 1:26 PM

Just watched Waddle take it to the house for Miami and it was just a reminder of our clear need for speed at the receiver position. I hope one of our new guys will fit the bill and give Cade a another threat at WR.

Correct, lack of speed is definitely a problem.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm honestly not sure about this speed concern.

Dec 25, 2022, 7:02 PM

We haven't had a QB able to deliver balls downfield and exhibit potential speed and explosiveness. We have a 4.4 guy in Turner and everyone else is around 4.5. The only other 4.4 WRs we've had in the last 5 years has been Tee Higgins and maybe Deon Cain. Ladson supposedly had speed, but he never flashed it.

We have good and great receivers. Unfortunately they got a raw deal for 2 years straight, when they haven't been given the opportunity to show their skills. You saw how we had numerous guys show up when we changed QBs.

Jerry Rice ran a 4.6 at the combine. Speed is good but football is not a track meet

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Jerry Rice isn’t playing today’s game.

Dec 26, 2022, 8:04 AM

And when he did face some speed at CB (Deion), he struggled.

But Deion lost some toes

Not just speed but quickness...4.5 forty is great but separation comes from those first ten steps...when you can separate then everything else puts the dB at a serious disadvantage...catchup is great on fries but he** on a corner back or safety...murder on a linebacker! Renfrew was murder cause of his first ten steps and quick succinct cuts...he is a game changer!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

+1 for for the word succinct

Dec 26, 2022, 11:33 AM

That's a hartins® type word, had to look it up.

Definitley need some speed on the outside, Hate to say it but I hope ngata moves on so dabo will take a transfer. My man looks like he's got 40 yr old knees he was waay faster when he first got here.

Re: WR speed

Dec 25, 2022, 1:57 PM

We've got plenty of speed. What we lack are great hands, physicality, route running ability and the ability to help out the QB by breaking off a route.

Nuke? Not a burner
Renfro? Not a burner
Grisham? not a burner
Williams? Not a burner
Leggett? Not a burner
Butler and Tuttle? Not burners

But if you have the above and speed? Then you have a Watkins, Ross, etc.

Re: WR speed

Dec 25, 2022, 2:14 PM

True, but All those guys had at least 1 maybe 2 speed/rac guy that complemented them and could open the offense up and help them make more plays. Antonio is more of a true route runner renfrow type imo. Guys like Sammy, Artavis, Ray Ray, Amari.

WHEN did Grisham belong on this List? I could name a half dozen former Clemson receivers not on this List!

Dec 25, 2022, 5:32 PM [ in reply to Re: WR speed ]

I really think a QB that can buy a little time in the backfield while still looking downfield will make the receivers we have look much, much better than they have the last 2 years!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That’s the point, the QB shouldn’t have to buy time

Dec 26, 2022, 8:19 AM

for these WRs to get open downfield. You need speedy or shifty WRs who can quickly get separation in todays game. Defensive lineman are getting bigger and faster, and you have to counter that. It’s part of the reason why Antonio Williams instantly became our best WR. His precise route running combined with being quick in space fits today’s game better then a 6’4” jump ball WR.

Port got to take exception with that take on former players although I agree that speed is not required to have a great passing game.

Butler at 6’4” was won of the fastest players ever to come out of SC. He played at Ware Shoals HS for Joe Burgess. He and his team mate Steve Fuller were both track guys. Ironically, Dwight Clark might have been the fastest on the team.

I saw Nuke walk a guy down on a sure fire pick 6 against Easley one night. He has tremendous football speed. Same for Renfrow. Tuttle was not as fast as Butler but plenty fast.

All the guys I mentioned above are probably faster than any of our WRs except Turner and a pre injury Randall. Stellato is allegedly fast but has never been healthy. Brown coming in looks really fast and has some impressive track times.

Good Lord - you obviously know nothing about

Dec 25, 2022, 6:52 PM [ in reply to Re: WR speed ]

Butler - he was the 60 meter indoor acc champ - he’s in the class with Jacoby Ford, James Trapp and a handful of other guys as the fastest to ever wear the paw on the gridiron

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Good Lord - you obviously know nothing about

Dec 25, 2022, 9:29 PM

Yes. Also, Jerry Butler was 6’, not 6’4”.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yep - Jerry Butler was a track star

Dec 26, 2022, 8:10 AM [ in reply to Good Lord - you obviously know nothing about ]

state champ in the 100 in high school, beating a guy people thought couldn't be beat.

Re: Yep - Jerry Butler was a track star

Red Parker offered him after seeing him run in a track meet. He is also one of the nicest and humblest guys I knew while at Clemson.

Re: WR speed

Dec 25, 2022, 11:11 PM

Williams and Turner can help that, as can a QB that can make quick reads and throws.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: WR speed

Dec 26, 2022, 6:48 AM

I bet when we see a QB that can hit the receivers in stride rather than them having to stop their route to catch it, they’ll look faster.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Agree, we have a severe lack of speed at WR

Dec 26, 2022, 8:17 AM

It’s best to have a combination of precise route runners (Antonio Williams), possession guys, and burners. We have been missing that Jeudy/Waddle/Olave burner WR who can house one at any given time.
